I happened to be in the Waxahachie Academy store today, and I took a bit of time perusing their walking "sticks" in their camping section. These are the metal ones that are in several sections that you loosen to lengthen the stick and then retighten to make it "sturdy". I came away very unimpressed with the quality of their offerings. Lengthening them to the length I would need made them seem very unsturdy. Some, I could not tighten enough to keep the pole from slipping back into itself.

The cane or walking stick I purchase will definitely be of the wood variety. I've seen some in hickory and oak, and other woods too. They are much more pricey than today's Academy offerings, but would seem to be a much better purchase.
