It's actually a real human response to being shot. A gunshot carries about the same force as a good punch, albeit with far less surface area affected. The natural human reaction to an impact is to move in the same direction in an attempt to absorb the blow and avoid future blows. It doesn't work for gunshots; the bullet's made its hole long before your natural reaction kicks in, but it's still instinct. There's also a psychological element; there are thousands of movies and TV shows that subconsciously educate viewers about what you're supposed to do when shot, perpetuating the cycle; it happens in real life so they show it on TV. And finally, it really does happen. Incapacitate someone by pain, blood loss or nervous system disruption and their knees give way. Knees bend in front of them, pushing center of mass behind, and voila they're on their back. Couple that with the impulse imparted on the body by the bullet, however small, and if the person was standing upright and not moving they'll crumple onto their back.
No, I have seen people shot in real life, AND I have seen seemingly hundreds of training films. People tend to bend forward at the waist and fall forward. If they are off balance when shot, they tend to fall in the direction their weight is distributed.
In fact, there are many internet videos of real people being really shot. You can google them.

When the LEOs were investigating the home, one of them mentioned there was Kevlar in the chair.
(edited to add: TXI beat me on this by 1 minute!)
My pet peeve is "quiet" guns . . . a massive firefight breaks out in a concrete corridor, lots of FA, maybe grenades . . . and when there's a lull, the guys
whisper to each other.
The only movie I recall where guys actually were deafened by gunfire is
Blackhawk Down. . .

Heroes did it right more often than they did it wrong. I specifically remember Claire holding one of those huge race guns, and she held it correctly: finger off the trigger. It was somewhat comical because the handgun was so huge, and her tiny finger dwarfed by it...

I love it in “hot shots when the spoof just this topic
Every time they pull a pistol, the sound of the slide rack rings clear.

In Tombstone during the famous shootout at the OK Corral, Doc Holiday (Val Kilmer) shot three times from a double barrel shotgun without reloading. It really bummed me out because I love that film. "Your'e a daisy if you do" or "I'm your huckleberry"

watched the movie "shooter" a couple of times and Samantha caught something interesting.
When they are up in the mountains and the primary takes out almost everyone, the "senator" is then disarmed. It appears to be a 1911 style weapon, most prob. a .45. One would think that if he was expecting danger, it would have been loaded up to max (or at least only downloaded by one in the mag) yet the woman picks it up and proceeds to empty the weapon into the bad guy that had violated her.
She shoots 4 times and the gun is at slide lock. (must have been a california magazine <g>)
The bullet being "refired" is also a stretch for me. I would have thought that there would have been at least some deformaty hitting the soup can and then into the snow/ground. Even minor deformaty of hitting something as "soft" as the can would effect the "kill shot" taken from extreem distance. Maybe someone can clarify?

I love how many times you can rack a pump shotgun before ejecting a live round.

All the cars driven by Hollywood are bulletproof. In reality, cars are merely a concealment.
The only movie that has got the sound almost right is "The Heat"
I love the gun battle in that movie.

That's what I call being prepared!!
And, that's what I get for surfing the net while I'm watching TV! I missed that explanation!!

That and you missed when we where all taking about it at lunch today.
Kinda like the editor or some one later was thinking "What the heck, Fix that" So they had an extra get a couple lines.
Edited to add. To all that saw it what did yall think of the concealed Glock on the Terminator. New meaning to the term deep concealment.

That's one that bothers me. They always hide behind the couch and the perp empties a full mag into the furniture and nothing penetrates. If I remember correctly it happens in "Tomcats" with Shannon Elizabeth.

For what I remember, offhand, being a single movie that touches just about all pistol and shotgun goofs you can imagine, ya gotta rent
Shoot 'Em Up (R rated, and definitely not a family film). I saw it a couple of weeks ago, and was only halfway paying attention, but there were even several plot devices purposely made
around gun gaffs...even the ultimate downing of the bad guy (Paul Giamatti who, interestingly enough, seemed to be the only one in the film who had handled a pistol for real before), which I won't describe because it gives away too much of the climax. We can only hope the writers and director did all this intentionally, as satire. But somehow I don't think so.
Well, I gotta go blow-dry my gun now so that the primer will ignite...

Amusing experience several years ago while sitting on a jury for a guy who committed numerous armed robberies. In one of them, he held a group of adults (I believe it was 5+) at gunpoint in an apartment for about 20 minutes while he collected wallets and cell phones. The victims had a difficult time retelling the story and my 11 fellow jurors were shocked to hear that he terrorized them by
constantly racking the slide on the "shotgun" to emphasize his demands. I felt like I just told the other jurors that Santa Clause wasn't real after explaining the "shotgun" was empty and was actually a kids pump action .22.
To stay on topic, The Way of the Gun (circa 2000) is one of the few movies that gets much of the gun handling correct. Was watching "Primal Force" (ca 1999) the other night on TV and one of the characters was shooting a pistol with two fingers (both hands) on the trigger.

I love when the gun a person is carrying changes from scene to scene. In the 2nd Bourne movie when he attacks the guy in the airport security room he takes the guys beretta and then like 5 seconds later it turns into a glock, then later back to a beretta again. I may have the models wrong, but its been a while since I have seen it. It's happened in many other movies before, sometimes changing from ar-15's to ak-47's and whatnot and I laugh every time.
