So then it's 5.56?carlson1 wrote:rocco7869 wrote:Forgot to ask what caliber? .223 or 5.56?carlson1 wrote:Still for sale!

It will take both.
And I know WP is not a 100% reliable source, so here's a few more sources:While the external case dimensions are very similar, the .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm differ in both maximum pressure and chamber shape. The maximum and mean pressures for some varieties of the 5.56 mm (different cartridge designations have different standards) exceed the SAAMI maximums for the .223 Remington, and the methods for measuring pressures differ between NATO and SAAMI.[2] The 5.56 mm chamber specification has also changed over time since its adoption, as the current military loading (NATO SS-109 or US M855) uses longer, heavier bullets than the original loading did. This has resulted in a lengthening of the throat in the 5.56 mm chamber. Thus, while .223 Remington ammunition can be safely fired in a 5.56 mm chambered gun, firing 5.56 mm ammunition in a .223 Remington chamber may produce pressures in excess of even the 5.56 mm specifications due to the shorter throat.[3]
I have a Bushmaster 24" Varminter. You can't see what is stamped on the barrel - if anything - because of the free floating hand guard. However, on the left side of the lower receiver, it says "CAL. .223-5.56MM". However, THIS FAQ PAGE on the Bushmaster website says:dicion wrote:So, Back to the OP's question, what caliber is it? (What's actually stamped on the barrel?)
Emphasis mine...All Bushmaster rifles are chambered to accept 5.56mm ammunition and always have been. The NATO Spec 5.56mm chambers have a longer "leade" or throat than the SAAMI Spec .223 caliber chambers which have about half of the leade or throat of the 5.56mm chambering. While it is safe to fire both 5.56mm and .223 caliber ammunition in our rifles, the 5.56mm ammunition should not be fired in rifles chambered in .223 caliber as they will develop very high pressures.
I don't think so. Wylde chambering is found in Rock River Arms rifles. Bushmaster themselves say their rifles are chambered in 5.56. There's no reason why they would make that claim if it weren't true.austinrealtor wrote:I'm by no means an expert on any of this, but I believe the chambering used by Bushmaster (and others) is a "Wylde chamber" that was specifically designed to accept both 5.56 and .223 cartridges. I think - but don't know for sure - there are some rifles out there that will accept ONLY 5.56 and not .223 and vice versa.
