Glock is an Austrian company they make the guns here to get around some of the import restrictions. All the profits to Europe. Same with H&K, SIG, Beretta, etal.

Does Smith & Wesson keep their profits here in the good 'ol USA?

Maybe I should have asked the question that way...what companies
are American owned and American built

That should narrow the field somewhat...

Colt 1911's

Designed by an American, Build in America, served in the US military forces for over 70 years.

Doesn't get more American!

So, Colt and Smith & Wesson are pure American firearms?

Colt
Smith & Wesson
STI

Any others?

It'd be kinda cool to have a list of pure American
firearms unless it's been done before...

You would have to maintain the list. For example, S&W was owned by Brits ten years ago.

CompVest wrote:If you should decide on a 1911 style handgun, you should consider STI in your top choices. They are very well made with everything from a very nice entry level handgun (The Spartan) to tricked out beauties. They also come in a varieties of sizes to fit your shooting and carry needs.

The best part is that not only are they made in the USA, they are made right here in Texas. Georgetown to be specific.
Some of the STI pistols are made in the Philippines by Armscor.
Well, to be technically correct, while all of the guns are assembled in the US, some of the frames are made in the Philippines.

But, if you really want to have fun buying the gun, STI will arrange tours so you can see them making it. Then you will know where the frame was made. I have been told they are also pretty good to work with on customizing. Some of the agents are negotiating with them to make the 75th anniversary TABC commemorative.

TABC as in the alcohol police?

I didn't know they carried, but I guess they'd have
to since they deal with a bunch of drunks all the time

Same as Germany, Austria, Italy, etc.

Even Croatia is part of NATO now.
