I believe that TDDude has a good point. Sometimes people can be too quick to judge and a legit invesitgation might uncover things not seen on the surface. So even though it is seems like a "open-shut" case, I wouldn't personally be willing to skimp on the investigation.

At the NRA convention they had a video of a sword in action on a pig carcass. It was pretty convincing. But if there is any distance at all. I think I prefer a gun.
