Small hijack: How about a wally-walk challenge coin?


Back on topic, I would imagine that having a "badge" may give the bearer a
false sense of entitlement - that they could use that badge to stop a crime
in progress, etc. When of course, we are not Law Enforcement...

All joking aside, as a curio item that you leave at home (no, really, leave it at home!!!) to show your friends for a laugh, then sure, buy yourself a CHL badge.

But for carrying on your person when you are carrying a weapon? The potential liabilities far outweigh any potential benefits. If you're carrying a gun, additional liability is not something you want to take on willingly.

A CHL badge makes you legal for Post Office carry... You need a neck strap/lanyard with the badge and your CHL displayed in a clear plastic case, and then a blue windbreaker with TXCHL in yellow block letters on the back. That is, unless you are a bounty hunter, then BEA (Bail Enforcement Agent) is the correct lettering. Be sure to get a "high and tight" buzz cut (if male) and a mustache is de rigeur for cops and cop wannabes.

Reminds me of Top Gun where a girl points at the NFO (Navy Flight Officer) wings on Tom Cruise's partner "Goose" and asks "Are you a PILOT?!" and he says "Yep, I'm a Naval Aviator". When people ask about your CHL badge and say "are you a cop?", you say "Yep, I'm licensed to carry a deadly weapon...".

When I was in the Navy in the 80's another junior officer and I had responsibility for picking up certain classified codes and cryptographic equipment. We found some really cool looking identification card forms that authorized us to travel with classified information if signed by our ship's Captain. We got ID photos, bamboozled the CO into signing, and laminated the cards. Why? Because as my buddy said..."Leave it on your coffee table...Chicks will dig it...".

So what's the point of all my stupid stories? I think the general consensus here is that CHL badges are for posers and wannabe's. The "Post Office Carry" is another of these endlessly debated topics, though seemingly with less consensus.

Hi Norman. My CHL instructor actually carries one of these and told the class that they should consider buying one. He went so far as to tell us where we could buy one (Houston area). As I recall his take was to keep it concealed. You'd display it after the fact (i.e. you've drawn your weapon and are waiting on LEO to arrive). My personal view is that it's just one more thing to carry, drop, lose, etc. I hope I never have to draw my weapon and therefore have no need for this. I just don't see the value.

I see it either making the Cop highly-annoyed or highly-amused.

A CHL Badge is right up there with Carrying Handcuffs on you, to me atleast

Badges are for LEO's. CHL's are not LEO's.

Altogether now let's say it again, "CHL's are not LEO's".

Now go and do the right thing.
