Not so much as a void, but WHO WILL HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS. Atheists don't believe in God, so they do or don't do things based on the LEGALITY of something. The legality of something is determined by the government.
People who believe in God do or don't do something based on God's laws. Even if something is legal or you could do something without getting caught by the police, religious people will at least try to do the right thing because they know that they're held accountable by GOD.
So, when I say atheists are state-ists, I do not mean atheists believe the government should take over everything. I also don't mean that the government somehow fills some void in atheists. It only describes WHO WILL HOLD SOMEONE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS, the government or God.
Please don't misunderstand. I do not mean to say anything bad about atheists. Many of my friends are atheists and I used to be one until one day, I realized that being an atheist doesn't mean that you aren't religious. It takes just as much blind faith to NOT believe in God as it does to believe in God. Atheists also go to church (North Texas Church of Free Thought or NTCOF). Ergo, atheism is just another religion. NTCOF even tried to get classified as a religion for IRS tax benefits, but was rejected. So, if atheism is a religion, then what's the substitute for God? You might be surprised to find that it's the government.
Even though I do believe in God, going back to the original discussion, sometimes I think that if there's no religion, then there would be no religious wars. We would have no terrorists, no Israeli/Arab conflict, no religious discrimination, no Islamberg, etc. So, although religion is good, the absence of religion can also be good. In other words, atheism is not bad, but just different. I guess this makes me a very confused Christian and ex-atheist.
