flint,
Please keep in mind I never once said that everyone should do this or that it is "gospel", because my LEO friend suggested it. All I stated was that this is my routine. I do practice this at all times. It also helps me because I am left handed. Most people assume that all others are right handed, therefore when I reach for my phone or knife it does not elude to me being left handed. Thus making concealment even better.
Also, we must always be alert, but you never know when the would-be attacker who's in front of you, has a friend behind you lurking in the bushes. This friend can at any point jump from cover while your are in the process of drawing your weapon. Then the fight is on for control of your weapon. Having a knife at easy access may be your only hope for survival.

I understand. My reply to your post was addressed to everyone. Hopefully....each person will examine their own needs. In no way....was it intended to be a "rebuttal" to the subject. Thank you....for raising the question(s), it provides us all... food for thought.

Sounds like you have something that works for you, excellent.

Yes, we can create "what if" scenarios that would support or discredit any particular technique or tactic. My reply was meant only to stimulate each person to give thought to what would be best for them.

In the case you cite above (two on one...fighting for possession of the gun), you are basically talking about retention techniques. I would submit....that using your firearm to "shoot the attacker(s)" off of you would be of more effect than trying to access your knife.

Unless you are schooled/aware of how to make bio-mechanical cuts, then odds are... you going to lose your gun before your attacker succumbs to random slashes or stabs.

I'd rather use both hands to hang onto my weapon, parry off blows and fight back (with my primary weapon) than go digging around for my knife. Since you don't know the resolve or skill level of your attackers....you may inadvertently put yourself in a worse situation (time wise) trying to wield a secondary weapon....(when you need to be fighting to retain the first).

Just because you are in a struggle....doesn't necessarily mean you can't shoot. Any decent instructor can show you how to shoot at you attacker's hip, leg, torso (by dropping to one knee) while in a struggle.

Simple concepts/principles/ that involve unbalancing your opponent...and using large muscle groups against smaller.... can be learned by anyone.

I am not against carrying a knife, I have one with me everyday....but there is a time to use it...and a time to leave it alone.

Circumstance would have to dictate when it is appropriate/feasible to deploy it. Just like with a firearm, having a knife (the mere possession of one) is not the same thing as knowing how to use one. ;-)

Anyway, thanks again for the thread....is it always good to review one's plans and contingencies.

Flint.

gum
self defense pen
keys
lighter
wallet
flashlight
spare gun

I'm running out of room. ;-)

Funny thing is, I have always carried my cell phone on my weak side - long before I even considered carrying.. I don't exactly know why and, in fact, my co-workers have questioned my about this before. Then at some point, I began carrying a Gerber tool in a pouch on my strong side - so it worked well that I was used to my phone on the weak. Then I stopped carrying the Gerber - but the phone stayed on weak. Now the Gerber is replaced by a handgun - so all is well with the world.

I carry my knife on my predominately weak side (left) for firearms, but I learned to use knives left handed so both are on their strong side.

Write or wrong I consider my knife a tool, not so much a weapon. getting old, arthritic with a back that does do stress well. knife gets clipped either10:00 back strong side or weak front pocket. Phone is weak side shirt pocket. ( Really is the strong side)

Heaven forbid I ever have to draw it and blow anybody to smithereens. (what/where is smithereeens :smilelol5: )

My cell phone is on the left because it gets tangled up in the seat belt when it's on the right. I carry a folder clipped to my right pocket, but it's primarily a general purpose knife. I also carry a fixed blade concealed that's set up for my left hand, and that's how I train.

Apparently it is in Ireland, next to a girl named Colleen.

smithereens: "fragments," 1829, from Ir. smidirin, dim. of smiodar "fragment," perhaps with dim. ending as in Colleen.

My thought is that if you carry a gun you also need to carry a cellphone.
They are both lifesaving tools that work hand in hand with each other when the unthinkable happens.

:iagree:

I got the phone before I got the gun.

I carry my knife, wallet and phone on my weak side. The reason is that because I carry a full size pistol, usually in a OWB holster, and I am afraid of flashing someone while reaching for my wallet or phone. Carrying them on the weak side reduces the risk. It also help distribute the weight a little too. In never thought about it from a tactical stand point.

What works for me: cash, keys, and phone are on my weak side. Knife, wallet, and firearm are all on my strong side. My intent is to have my left hand offering up the pretty shiny things while my right prepares the surprise at the end of the conversation. Work and walk a lot in downtown Houston and this has developed over several years of watching how beggars and less savory types react to our interactions. Initially this worked with just the knife but now with the gun this still seems to work the best.

Agree phone, keys (too many), small flashlight on left (weak) side. Pistol and wallet on the right. Just seems to make sense.

My phone is in my shirt pocket, wallet stays in left front. Don't carry a knife at the moment.
