A good set of dogs and a good sharp knife. We have caught nearly 200 hogs since january 1st this year without a shot fired!

I know a guy who strangled a bob cat once, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna do it myself. I prefer to have some distance between myself and critters that can cause me serious injury and/or death regardless of how many legs they have.

Wouldn't the 7.62X39 .... (Ballistically, like a 30-30; 150-170 gr. rd.) work for you guys ?

Works just fine, The SKS and the Fay Kay 47 both are popular hog guns in my area.

Aren't a lot of the over-populated hogs now being traced back to wild Russian boar heritage? Seems fitting to dispatch them with a Russian round from a Russian rifle.

There is an obvious difference in appearance between and feral hog and a Russian bore. Size, fur thickness, teeth, and shape of the snout. I don't like any of them so I prefer some distance myself.

7.62X39 has a lot more knockdown power (a lot more due to bullet weight) than .223. I prefer my SKS over my AR for hog hunting at ranges under 200 yds.
Between the AK-47 and the SKS, the SKS is a little easier to get followup shots with and is slightly more accurate, but for hog hunting either of those will do the trick. The SKS and the AK's won't break the bank either, and are easy to find.
I don't see a point in chasing a hog through the brush in various weather conditions with a gun that costs more than $500, but that's just me.

i looked hard at the 7.62X39 or the 7.62x51 (.308). i decided I'm not buying this gun to cut paper, i'm buying it to shoot pigs, 308 offers more hunting round less bulk cheep'o rounds

so I picked up an AR-10 in 308 last week

figure i can also deer hunt with this.

but as others have said, you only get one shot most time, so a 22-250 or 22mag to the ear is more then sufficient.

True, but if the animal is running at you, you will still likely only get one shot and it may be difficult to place it exactly in the ear when shooting from the front.

In that circumstance, I'd strongly prefer a .308 soft point to anything that starts with a 2.

Failure to stop an angry hog hurts - a lot.

That is the best round you could have chosen in my eyes. TONS of knock down, TONS of range, and the AR10 platform is a dream to shoot such a high power round. Like stated there are lots of ammo choices ranging from mil-surplus to $50 a box ballistic tip Hornaday. If you hit anything like a hog with any kind of .308 its going to fall down. Federal makes some 150grn soft point .308 that Wal-Mart sells for around $16/box that is cheap and devastating.

What kind of optics have you chosen for your new rig?

Any one of these. Then you can use that George Foreman grill to cook them with.

I'd dust off my old 7.7x58mm Arisaka if the rounds weren't so dang expensive.
