It could breed contempt for authority. Or catch on fire.

When I was a sophomore in high school (which housed jr high in the same building), the president of the graduating class was also a student aide (and National Honor Society member, etc), which gave him pretty much unfettered access to the front office. He often made the announcements over the intercom. This of course gave him "means" and "opportunity." He supplied his own motive.

Late one afternoon a day or so before the end of school that year (which pretty much amounted to babysitting, since finals were over), he strolled into the office, picked up the microphone and announced to the school, "All 7th and 8th grade students report to the gymnasium immediately for a special convocation."

Of course there was no convocation. The Jr High students, delighted to do anything but sit in the classroom, promptly stampeded for the gym. About half the Jr High teachers realized instantly they were being had and were able to leap to their classroom doors to cut them off at the pass. However, the other half were either slow to think or slow to act, and a couple hundred kids went running down the hall (past the shouting principal) and stormed in on the surprised gym classes. Chaos reigned for about 15 minutes before everyone was herded up and corralled back in the classrooms.

Mr. President's sentence for this transgression was to dust all the athletic trophies in the display cases between the last day of school and the graduation ceremony. We knew this because as part of his graduation speech, the thanked the janitors for their supervision during his sentence.

I suppose nowadays he would have been expelled, had his diploma yanked, and probably jailed for something.


I hesitate to say what my buddies and I did for our graduation, as I am not sure what the statute of limitations is. The teachers then were cool with it, but who knows what kind of clowns are running good ol' BCHS now...

I don't think they can extradite you to Indiana after all this time.

Those Ferris Bueller's Day Off fantasies are so much fun.

I thought about riding my horse to work back in the 1970s. It was feasible, but I was not willing to bet my career on the slender sense of humor of the management.

He can say he is a girl trapped in a boys body. That will get them.

Some males are perfectly adjusted and simply want to wear their hair long.

I wouldn't know anything about that other than seeing the film Hair.

When in high school, I argued that the rules against guys having long hair and wearing ear rings was a form of sexual discrimination since the girls were allowed to have long hair and ear rings.
That didn't get me very far.
My government teacher told me that I could probably take that to court and win. . . . But in the mean time, I would not graduate with my class.

I never understood it, either. Probably there has been no fashion that either men or women have worn throughout history, even if we limit the discussion to Western European and American history.

I tried to fight the system in the sixties when I couldn't register for classes in a junior college because some of the hairs of my moustache were below the corners of my mouth! As a parting shot the Dean told me my hair was about to be too long. He told me to take it up with the regents which was bogus because the public couldn't address the regents. I had a regular hair cut that was blocked in the back, not long hair. To put this in perspective I was employed full time as a sporting goods manager in a retail store. Sometimes now I wish there were some restrictions on dress and appearance.

Back in the hippie days, I was expelled from high school because I had long hair, would not tuck my shirt in and wore sandals. I was a bit of a radical, but I never did drugs, even when it was the "in" thing to do. This was a city school, I then finished at a country school with no more problems about my appearance. My long hair and other "bad" habits remained. Times do change, my kids are in a private catholic school and they have strict hair and uniform rules. They will abide by these rules because the quality of their education is far superior than that of the public school system. I did catholic school until the 10th grade, and only had to join the public school ranks because our only catholic high school closed. There is a definite difference in the teaching.

The Minotaur is half-bull. Somehow, it still seems that there is some connection to this story there.

This reminds me of when I shaved my head in high school. My parents were livid - my mom didn't speak to me for a month. My dad yelled at me and I'll never forget his quote (cleaned up a bit for the G-rating):

"Gosh darn it! My generation fought long and hard for the right to wear long hair and your generation's going and messing it all up!"

The neat thing about shaving your head is that they can't do anything about it.
