I thought we could already carry on campus if we have a CHL but we can't go into buildings.

That is true, but I only go there when I have a class to attend; and those classes are all inside campus buildings.

well, I live on campus, so I keep my guns in safes in my truck, and carry when I'm headed away from campus...

I am guessing one primary category are those who have *yet* to get their CHL for either age, financial, or other reasons.

I'm really curious about those who don't appear to have any need or desire to get a CHL at all. I've seen a few other threads where that has been inferred by what I read.

So, curious, why are you active on this forum without a CHL?

financially I can't do it right now, legally, I want to know what I am going to have to deal with and I find that info here, I stumbled upon this forum while looking for info on CHL laws, internet forum language is hard to understand, and if this post was meant to be derogatory toward people that dont have a chl......well, then I guess we'll all leave........

I suggest you re-read the OP. I even stated "No judgement... I think it's AWESOME that you are, but I'm curious as to why?"

There was definitely nothing derogatory about it. If it were up to me, I'd have everyone in Texas on this forum. It only helps the cause of protecting our 2A rights. This place is full of common sense and smart people. It's healthy for people to read this forum.

When the TexasCHLforum was created in Dec. 2004, the name was pretty descriptive of the content people would find. However, in the last 6 years, the subject matter covered extends far beyond that solely related to a Texas Concealed Handgun License. Some of the expansion required rule changes, like the creation of the "Off Topic" forum that caused no small amount of hand wringing when we decided to give it a try.

Sometimes I wonder if the name causes some people not to read the board for the first time thinking it really is focused solely on CHL.

Well, I'm here because I'm generally positive about the idea of having a CHL. I intended to get one a while ago, but backed away from it once I realized that, due to my workplace and other stuff, I would not be able to carry anyway much of the time. I still want one, on the "because I can" principle, but it's not a top priority.

Well, I got started on the board when a friend asked me to stop in and answer some questions I might know about. But I like the people and the discussions, so I stayed.

I never got my CHL because I am covered for carrying in other ways. But, as a retired officer, I have many of the same routine issues (like concealing or carrying in comfort all day) as a CHL. And I am always up for a discussion of guns or the law, so I am still here.

And I have considered getting a CHL several times, mostly as some of my children were looking at getting theirs. All it would get me is an exemption from the NICS check though, and I have not had any problems or even delays there yet. That makes it an expensive luxury for me.

If you carry as a retired officer under LEOSA, aren't there some restrictions that are actually stricter than for a CHL. Like yearly requalification and having to qualify with the particular firearm to be carried? CHL lasts 5 years, and presuming you get SA version virtually no restrictions on type of gun. I know you mentioned you are a currently a reserve PO in Texas, but were you not and were carrying under the retired provisions of LEOSA, wouldn't you have significant benefit? Oh and you could get your original CHL with PO discount and I believe even a waiver of the shooting requirements by using your status as a reserve Texas PO. Right?

No criticism intended, just think there might be some benefits for you. Personally I carry several concealed carry permits in addition to Texas and once it helped me when Texas took longer than the statutorily allowed time to renew my CHL and I carried w/ a Florida CWFL for about 20 days.
