No! I would not go anywhere near a tactics or roleplaying class that used real guns.

There are trainers who use simunitions or airsoft to roleplay scenarios. You can also do your own scenario training with a few friends and airsoft guns. Dummy "red guns" are good for some scenarios and don't require gloves and faceshields. Have some roleplayers and one or more observers (coaches) who set up the scenario, give each player their own instructions, observe what happens, and give feedback. Rotate through the roles if you're doing it with friends.

Like someone said, the important thing is to treat it like training and not a game. Among other things, that means the purpose of the exercise is to learn, not to win. The roleplayers should have simple scripts and should follow the scripts, even if that means they lose. For example, if the robber's script says to run if confronted, the person playing the robber should run instead of improvising. The observer has enough to watch without people hijacking the training to boost their ego. (If someone can't follow instructions, uninvite them next time.)

As a coach, it's good to throw in some no shoot scenarios.

There is some good training shooting in IDPA competitions. These are very safe and allow you to practice many things that the local range may not. drawing from a holster, shooting fast, shooting while moving with multiple cover options, multiple threat and friend targets.
Many larger towns have local IDPA clubs.

Why do you think tactical handgun classes are targeted at personal security guys? Most of them are not limited to law enforcement peoples only.


The people I have seen at training classes (ShivWorks ECQC, Combined skills, CQT, and Defensive Pistol) were mostly chl holders. The CQT & ECQC classes had the most scenarios.

I would second looking into IDPA. It's not training, it's a game. However, it is excellent practice for developing skills that would translate into actual CHL scenarios, such as drawing and firing from a holster, shooting quickly, shooting under pressure, reloads, etc.

Maybe some weak hand shooting drills for everybody in the CHL class...

Well, maybe not for civilians, but Air Force E-1 clerks should be ready to defend the integrity of USAF personnel records!!!
