Question: Why don't they allow FMJ ?
Various reasons by various ranges, but the most common (and often unknown) is that rifle-launched FMJs that hit short of the target on outdoor ranges can "skip the berm". Not a good thing unless you own lots of unoccupied land down range. And most ranges can not afford that.

I'm not sure how big the largest room in your house is, but mine is nowhere near 25yds. Sounds like a fine distance if your home defense gun is an AR. That is 75ft, BTW, so its not like its arms length or anything

Basically, I just built this AR and wanted to function check it and run a few ammo types through it. Typically, I sight in my rifles at 50 or 100 yds. Even hunting, I rarely make a shot over 100yds. Still, shooting indoors in low light was a BLAST!!!

Hey, it can beat not shooting at all if 100 yards or better is not handy outdoors ...
And, coincidently, a 25 yard zero with many rifles whose sights (or especially) scope recticles are a couple of inches above the bore, makes 'em pretty close to dead-on at 200 to 250 yards.

Terrell isn't exactly "D/FW" (but it's getting closer all the time). But if you are up for the drive, they do allow FMJ. They have John C. Garand matches and NRA Foreign Military Bolt-action Rifle matches.

The trajectory of a .223 will give you a 25/300 battle zero. That means that you zero at 25 yards and you will be on zero again at 300 yards. At 100 yards you will shoot about 6 inches high with this zero. So you aim about 6 inches low.
You can also do a 50/250 zero. It gives you a flatter trajectory.

Really. They told me "no FMJ" last time I was there
I went back today and they indeed allowed me to shoot FMJ.

For some reason, it seems every range I know about doesn't allow FMJ, and I'm a cheap person.
Gibson's Outpost in Mesquite on Lawson Road is FMJ friendly. It's $10.83 per day with a $6.00 annual membership fee.
Finally checked these folks out. Definitely an interesting family that seems to run it, but if you follow their rules, you'll do fine. I'll more than put up with some of the eccentricities since they allow me to shoot the dreaded FMJ.
