Wasn't it one of the last acts of the Bush Administration that changed the policy against concealed carry in National Parks? I seem to remember the Obama Administration fighting to repeal the policy change.
The Bush administration proposed the rule change, the O administration and the courts killed it. The new law got tacked onto to the credit card bill that the Democrats wanted. The Democratic congress and Obama passed the bill into law.

Thanks for jogging my memory. I got close .....the point being Obama was against it and fought against it. He approved it only because it was the only way he could get his credit card reforms. Now he's taking credit for something he was/is against as though it was his proposal all along.

"Common Sense" tells me not to trust anything that he says. If it sounds like he is supporting gun owners, then you know he is not.

Beware of wolf in sheeps clothing. It's all about nudging away a little bit of your freedoms over a period of time but it's done in a common sense way with a SMILE !

Some facts to contemplate.

From the editorial:

" Most gun owners know that the word "commonsense" isn't a code word for "confiscation." And none of us should be willing to remain passive in the face of violence or resigned to watching helplessly as another rampage unfolds on television."

Question:
So what IS commonsense a code word for?

I am glad to see him go on record.
There are two predominant meanings for "commonsense" in the gun debate.

One is the commonsense approach to treat it like a constituitonally protected civil right, with the same kind of restrictions, licenses, and fees we apply to other rights like religious freedom, voting and the 4th and 5th amendments.

The second is a code word for confiscation and other civil rights violations.

Very well put. I am fond of letters that don't just criticize but offer alternatives as well. I wonder if he even saw the letter.

I wonder if the AZ paper would consider publishing it. But that would be unbiased reporting....

My submitted reply:

Mr President;

While your paternalistic lecture claiming the privilege of defining "commonsense" for the masses is all well and good, let us stop for a moment and take a look at the true meaning ot the word(s).

For something, a thought in this case, as that is what a "sense" is; "the sense of the people", "I sense a change", "This makes no sense". to be common, it must be the sense of more than just a simple majority, it must be the sense of a super-majority, of all but a small portion of the population.

And your little diatribe just happens to sound exactly like so many others offered by the anti-gun minority, which makes the common judgement of what you stated, that you really do mean radical gun control and confiscation despite your protestations otherwise.

The true common sense is that what you propose has not worked in the past, why repeat old mistakes?

The true common sense is that criminals will not be deterred by laws against what they do, that is the very definition of criminality.

The true common sense is the sense commonly held, not the redefinition from on high, from the "Bully Pulpit" and that is why the mid-term elections went the way they did, because the common sense was against you and your ilk, and the common people spoke at the polls.

-------------------

I won't hold my breath until I see it published.

Came across this last night. A great satirical article about compromising on gun control.

My favorite line was "Nobody should own a gun if they are found to have a criminal record, a psychiatric record, or a Barbra Streisand record."

Since liberals favor gun control and conservatives are against it, just take away all the guns from the liberals. That way, if there is ever a conflict like the 2000 election that cannot be resolved peacefully, the right will win because we will have all the guns.

'Commonsense' is used with regards to 2nd Amendment restrictions for the same reasons that 'Patriot' was used in the Patriot Act.
