Heading out to Phoenix in a few days, so, if I understand this correctly, no concealed carry in NM, but I can legally have loaded firearms in the car? Want to be legal and don't want to end up as a test case.

...nobody said that...do some research online and read the answers from the New Mexico law...even the Traveler's Guide, which I use as a quick reference, has made mistakes...and your last sentence depends on you KNOWING the law...not just what you might think someone told you...no matter how well-meaning we are...

Well, I am glad I've already been there in my lifetime ... crossed it off my 'state's i have been too' list.
Won't plan on going back. So CO via OK through the Panhandle is good for me!

I might be wrong about this, but it seems to me that NM does not have state preemption, so consequently it is possible for a municipality to ban open carry.......but again, I'm not absolutely certain about this.

New Mexico Constitution, Article II

Sec. 6. [Right to bear arms.]
No law shall abridge the right of the citizen

In 1986, New Mexico residents voted to amend the state constitution forbidding local regulation of firearms.

This is very bad news for me and others who regularly visit NM. I have already called Governor Martinez’s office at 505-476-2200 to leave a comment. I pointed out that New Mexico benefits from a great many Texans who visit the state regularly, have a vacation home there, or often work in the state.

I don't know what she can do at this point, but I would encourage others to call as well. These changes were apparently posted without notice on the NM DPS website Friday afternoon.

...nope...they have a STRONG pre-emption law...

...if it's a thinking governor, that letter might do some good...heading into vacation time, the decision may be overruled...prolly not a law, but an administrative decision...this will cost them a lot of tourist $$$...

A week ago, Mrs. Oldgringo and I crossed from Texline, TX through Raton on our way to Montana. I made the comment then, THUMP BUMP, that I wish there was another way. This CHL action, along with the so-called Safety Corridor speed trap between Clayton and Raton and THUMP BUMP will guide us to another route up through Oklahoma next summer. I was also thinking of coming back in September through northern NM along the Cimmaron River...no more.

First, do any of y'all know if there is a New Mexico gun forum? I can't find one.

When it comes to concealed carry, is there a difference between having a gun in a holster on my body and having it in a locked container in my possession? As far as I know, there is no difference in Texas, but is there in New Mexico? I will be flying into the Albuquerque airport, taking a shuttle, and checking the container into a safe.

As always, thank you for the insight! Must be terribly frustrating to be [a conservative] gov in that state.
