A lot has changed in Austin since I lived there 45 years ago, and some of the things that haven't changed are different than I remember.

http://www.krtraining.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; has an Austin area faq on matches, training and range.
Very useful if you want to shoot and/or compete.

Eagle Peak is a nice outdoor range, but the last time I was there they were still prohibiting FMJ rifle ammo. Also you have to sit through a basic safety lecture and pay $10 to get a "range card."
Best of the West range - I've heard good things about them. Ranges up to 1000 yards!
Been to Austin Rifle Club once as a guest - but they're clear over on the other side of town from me. (I'm near Lake Travis.)
Red's in Oak Hill is OK for an indoor range (100 yards) but the lighting isn't the best. The one in Pflugerville - about the same.
Gun shops . . . three of the last four new guns I've bought were from Cabela's down in Buda . . . they are NOT usually the best price, you have to work their sales and (once you're on their mailing list) their coupons; then you can do OK. Otherwise, there's a gun show in town roughly once a month where you can sometimes get a reasonable deal on a "common" gun or maybe one that's not so common. (I got a new bobtail S&W 1911Sc there for almost $300 under MSRP last year - just a tad cheaper than I've seen on Gunbroker.)
Heritage was mentioned . . . I did a lot of business with the first set of owners, but as for the
next set . . .

Let's just say I found them to be ethically deficient and haven't darkened their door for quite some time.

My favorite area store is Storied Firearms, just west of the city:

I've worked with Charlie and Co in a partnership to help out a customer. They're awesome people and I love their vision and what they've done. Visit their store if you get the change -- it's decorated in a old west train station theme, and quite gorgeous!

Indeed, Iet's not forget OldCannon! AFAIK he has the most affordable FFL transfer price in town. I know I'm going to do my next transfer through him for sure! And how could we not want to do business with a fellow Texas CHL Forum member?
The Old Cannon Armory

I'll give another

to Old Cannon. He did the FFL for my wife's gun and it was a very pleasant and easy experience. Not to mention the lowest rates for me as a forum member and CHL holder.
