If 6.8 or 6.5 ammo was cheaper, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Its expensive to stock even cheap 5.56 now though

Not to get too off topic, but if the OP didn't want to do the class III / tax stamp, would an AR pistol in 300 BLK be anything worth having? I don't know too much about the 300 BLK round, but seem to remember reading/hearing the 300 BLK recoil wasn't that bad.

In any event, from the limited things I've read/heard about the 300 BLK, it seems to be a good AR option and is gaining in popularity (or the Freedom Group is doing a good job of making it seem that way).

Yeah - and I do have a 308 Weatherby - but to do that means the AR10 platform - and that equates to weight and cost. I've looked at the DPMS LR308B which isn't that bad but I want something to take the place of my 44mag Marlin as well - which means fairly small and maneuverable.

Do you reload? I ask because reloading may defray the cost and logistical problems of a 6.5 or 6.8mm gun. Agree with you on the weight issue. My AR10 is a tank—useful more as an "overwatch" rifle. I wouldn't want to hump it all day in the boonies. My AR15s are much more fun in that regard. I have no practical experience with 6mm class chamberings though. Never fired one in my life.

That's one reason a 308 is a nice idea - I already have the dies.

I really wonder how effective/accurate the 308 is out of a 16" barrel though. Seems you have to get down to that to even approach a sensible weight.

The OP (i.e. me) is totally ignorant of the class III / tax stamp restrictions Which is why I was asking. I can't shake the conviction that there has to be some sort of restriction that would stop a dirty stinkin' furriner from getting one. Having said that - a suppressed 300 BLK with subsonic rounds, 12" barrel and a laser sight strikes me as an ideal backup for a home defense weapon (a semi-auto 12 guage )

The new 2012 armalite AR-10A that takes 3rd party mags (oh boy do people like to have strong opinions about pros/cons of *that* move) in 16" carbine comes with a 2-2.5 MOA accuracy guarantee. I don't recall offhand seeing other 16" guarantees, but that at least gives an idea.
