Get some JB BORE CLEANER a 12 gauge brass brush remove the Farrell and polish the snot out of that chamber.

I had this problem with 2 870s
The reason is the inside of the chamber is rough and when the cheap shells are fired they grab the groves making it very hard to eject.

The fix

Get a brass 12 ga bore brush and some "000" steel wool. Tightly wrap the brush with some steel wool getting down in the brush. Chuk it in a drill...set it on low...and go to town on the chamber. It won't take much but will fix the problem. You can also put some metal polish on brush and it will help even more.

To help get some reach to the end of the chamber I took an aluminum SHOTGUN cleaning rod and cut 2" off the end where the brush screws in.
Install brush in rod and chuk it in your drill.

END OF PROBLEM.

I now do this to every 870 I get in my hands.

Even if you don't have a problem with shells sticking, doing this will smooth the ejection too

One of my friends had problems with an 870 getting jammed up. He had to take it apart to fix it. It turned out that a screw inside the receiver got loose and jammed things up. I was there when it happened. If I wasn't there I wouldn't have believed him. I can't tell you much more I prefer my Mossberg 500.

Gave the chamber a polish last night and it was much better today - it only seemed to get sticky at the end when the barrel got quite warm

Glad its working for you. One of mine you could see a lot of machining marks and I had to work it a couple of times to get it smooth enough.

What screw/screws are inside the receiver on an 870?

Of the 6 870s I currently own, none of them have any screws inside the receiver.

Y'all are making me more and more glad I went Mossberg for my home shotgun needs!

I've honestly never heard of this being an issue before; my issues with 870s revolve around the shell lifter and reloading the magazine under stress/adrenaline. I did have a Mossy 500 that would refuse to eject the Winchester cheap ammo; the extractor was slipping off the rim of the shell of the cheap stuff, but it never choked on high brass loads. I compared the rims, and found the cheapo stuff did not have quite as "positive" a rim as the high brass; it had a very slight slope and a bit more of a curve than did the brass. When I sold the gun, I let the buyer know of the issue, and he replaced the extractor. Never another problem with that gun, AFAIK, but this being a manufacturing problem, not a design problem, I'll pay closer attention to other shotguns as well. I'm sure Remington's not the only one that has had this sort of issue.

Old 870's got better fit and polish than the post 1995 ones.
