Cycling rounds through a magazine breaks it in. The follower moves. The spring compresses/decompresses. I'm also a believer in the shoot-what-you-use-use what-you-shoot model. I have several mags for my carry that I cycle through carrying and shooting. I also load -1 round. I feel that takes some of the extra pressure off, with the idea that the first ( and perhaps the 2nd most important) round will cycle better.

Don't load magazines to full capacity until you know they will feed at full capacity.
My Walter ppq simply will not function with12 rounds.

Good rule is always load -1 whatever the manufacture states, until you know 100% your gun will function with a fully loaded magazine.

Get an Uplulu magazine loader. $30 to save a lot of time and your thumbs. Magazines are built to be used hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of times. The springs will be stiff out of the box and should stay that way for a long time. So I call bull on the loading -1. If a magazine won't hold the number it's supposed to, toss it. If a gun won't run with a fully loaded mag, get rid of it. An EDC has to withstand the rigors of daily carry and still be reliable if the need arises, so if there's a part your system that you feel you have to baby, you might want to rethink things.

People used to load -1 because they thought it would prolong the spring life, but that was a myth that has been thoroughly debunked. If the spring is too stiff just take a stick or cleaning rod and use it to fully depress and release the spring a bunch of times and it’ll loosen up. Keep testing every so often and just do it up until you can comfortably fit the last round. Or get the Uplula. Either way you’ll be fine.

I carry my Glock 22 with 2 spare mags in a double pouch on my weak arm side next to my cell phone.(I'm Left Handed)
All my Mags are loaded with Hornady Critical Duty.
When I practice I alternate Mags each sesion. I strip out the CD ammo & use the Win white box for practice.
My Mags are labled 1,2 & 3. Rotating every practice session give them exercise & insures there working properly.
Example: I use Mag #2 during the entire practice session.
Next time I use Mag #3 the whole session etc......

You can call bull all you want.

I have see plenty of students with new guns and they simply will not run at full capacity until broken in.
I only see this come up with double stack mags.

I didnt say anything about babying it, just to run your equipment so you know it is reliable.

I rotate with 4 mags. Change one out every month to let the spring relax. More mags on order

The only distinction I make among my magazines for carry is the type of base. I carry my Colt Government Model with magazines with original style flat bases, as that makes the rig just a tiny bit smaller in the butt, which seems to make it print a little less. For spares, a pad is nice but either works.

Unreliable magazines are marked as such, segregated, and are not carried. Most of those are not for pistols I would carry for "crisis management in short range interpersonal conflicts".

I keep different magazines loaded with different rounds. I have one I carry when just outside the house doing yardwork, and one for carrying chl. The difference is the rounds. I don't want to waste expensive hollow point rounds on a rattlesnake or other critter, so the around the yard magazine is just loaded up with basic fmj ammo. The defensive ammo is in the other magazine and I just swap them out depending on my route or activities.
