The Afghan war drama “Lone Survivor” blasted past expectations and its rivals with a huge $14.4 million Friday, and the gritty tale of courage and honor is on pace for a weekend in the $38 million range.

That’s double the business that distributor Universal and analysts were expecting ... was a hit with critics, but the massive Friday showing indicates its patriotic themes struck a major chord with mainstream audiences – who not only showed up in unexpected numbers but gave it a rare “A+” CinemaScore.

First movie I've been to in a long time, if ever, people were crying and clapping at the end. It was an excellent intense movie.

And here we go with the idiotic, tone-deaf media ...

Would love to see this movie but as a general rule we don't go to "R" rated movies. Is the rating based mainly on violence or is the language that rough? Other stuff?

Jmra - Check out this link. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1091191/par ... f_=tt_ql_7" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

No nudity or alcohol, drugs, or smoking, but plenty of profanity [143 times - somebody actually counted] and plenty graphic violence, blood and gore.

You've clearly never hung out with SEALs before :lol:

Frankly, I didn't hear/see anything that would be atypical for SEALs or real combat situations. Take that for what it's worth, but it's definitely an "R" rating.

Just in the Navy the language is that rough, and the SEALs just emphasize it.

Like they say, the only easy day was yesterday.

It is obvious that these media pretty boys, this one anyway, have no conception of military operations, and how often things don't work out just as planned. You don't have to be running around in the dark at 10,000' with machine guns, hopelessly outnumbered, to have experienced that in the military. Nobody plans an op that way, but sometimes things just don't work out.

Getting to be a SEAL involves getting used to being being cold, wet, tired and miserable, and liking it, never quitting no matter what. Tapper has never considered, and cannot imagine, the ramifications of that level of devotion to the op and your buddies.

Thanks. Will wait for the TV edited version.

Actually I did serve in the military and have worked with members who served in a number of roles including SEALs. It has been my experience that profanity, although common, is not a prerequisite for the occupation.
