I feel like you're saying there is there some scenario where it is justifiable for a dog to kill a 2 year old child, but I could be reading into it.

I know dog people will say about aggressive actions by children, or dogs not knowing any better....if a dog kills a child the dog dies, the owner is held responsible. That will likely be civil. I don't hold dogs and people on equal footing. Especially two year old children.

There are laws in place holding firearms owners to a certain standard if children are killed or injured by access to firearms. The penalties are fairly severe. The antis relish laws such as these despite the fact that children are killed and injured at a much higher rate through other causes such as not being secured in child restraints in cars and drowning in swimming pools.

I do not have statistics on children's injuries by animal attacks. As I stated in a previous thread our dog bit my granddaughter. I consider myself a responsible individual but in rethinking what happened I should have recognized the potential for an event.

Children should not be exposed to these risks. They manage to take enough risks on their own.

The dog owner should face some sort of criminal charge. Perhaps jail time is not the answer, but a clear message should be made on this event for dog owners. Too often people buy fashion dogs and cannot control them.

They will be held accountable, but I find it to early, w/o facts to jump to any conclusion on charges. I am curious as to who fired the shots.

A little more info. Seems they are talking misdemeanor charges. I've seen felony charges here in Austin for dog attacks.

For 2013 Stats show Pits as number one by far for fatal attacks. It's. no wonder since Pit Bulls are such a prevalent breed and have a proclivity and the ability for a vicious attack. Pit Bulls has been holding #1 for a long time. Bull Mastiffs on the other hand are not a particularly common breed and rank # 2 for 2013. For 2014 there was already is one listing for a Mastiff at the link below and we have two more now in recent days. Interestingly Rottweilers have been number two for previous years and mastiffs were not even listed as as an individual breed. For charts and descriptions going back to 2005 see the link below.

A 13-year-old New Jersey boy was mauled to death in a horrific attack by a 115-pound bull mastiff that got loose and went after the teen and his friend, police reported.

Kenneth Santillan was walking down a street near the Passaic River in Paterson, N.J., Feb. 28 when he and a friend came under attack by a giant bull mastiff that had escaped the fenced yard it was held in, Paterson police said.

Santillan and his friend, also 13, ran in opposite directions to escape the dog. Santillan's friend, whose name has not been released, was able to get away but suffered bite wounds to the hand. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

Santillan's body was found near an icy stream at around 11 p.m. that night, dead apparently from wounds inflicted by the dog. An autopsy is being carried out to determine the cause of his death.

"The exact cause of the boy's death is NOT known at this time. Medical Examiner's Office will be conducting an autopsy and issuing a full report," the Paterson police department said in a statement.

Paul Clarke, who owned the dog, named "Trigger," reportedly stabbed the animal repeatedly during the attack in an attempt to subdue it, suffering bite wounds himself. The dog was later euthanized and its body will be tested for rabies, police said.

No criminal charges have been filed against Clarke.

No problem. I learned something. I should include some of the story line when I post links. I'm surprised my post with the stats indicting pit bulls hasn't provoked any comments, which was certainly not my intent.

This is exactly the sort of situation which led to me getting my plastic, except I was on the receiving end of the attack.
I wasn't bitten, but I was pursued by two dogs which were illegally off-leash in a city park. I managed to put my back to a wooden fence and out-bluff the dogs by yelling and arm-waving. Also had to kick one to get him to back off after it lunged at me several times in close quarters. Their owner was mad at *me* and threatened to call the police, and I told her go ahead, it won't me be getting the ticket. I also explained to her that if I had been armed, I would have been justified in shooting her dogs as they were off leash and had attacked without provocation.

My heart goes out to the family of the young child who was killed.

It's not a "clue" that those people are lacking; it's respect for, and consideration of, other people that is missing in their little 'me first' minds.
