Face it, the fees are simply there to feed to bureaucratic monster.
I am sitting in Harrisburg PA waiting for my return flight to Houston right now (business trip). While here, I took a little drive over to Sheriff Denny Nau of Centre County to renew my PA non-resident license to carry firearms.
Walked in the front door of this small rural sheriff office. Within 10 minutes and $20, they had taken my picture and application, run the FBI check, and created a new laminated license good for the next 5 years. They also had time for friendly chit-chat and a smile.
I walked out with new license in hand.
I am a big proponent of handling licensing at the local sheriff level, someone who has to face the voters, instead of a nameless, faceless state bureaucracy.

Excellent! Renewals seem to be taking from 1 - 3 weeks right now.
