First possibly mistaken assumption: by pistol they mean pistol. The question to ask there is how far they'll try to go in redefining what a pistol is? And they don't care about whether a gun they want to ban is used to commit a crime. They're just after the low hanging fruit to establish a precedent and flex their muscles. If there is anything these freedom hating Marxists are good at it's incrementalism.
