The pro's also CARRY!
Why train if your do not carry?

You should always do both! Some people keep missing the point! You are not better off with out training. Simply "Formal" training is not always necessary. And at which point is what ever skills/training you possess sufficient to carry?

Everyone claims to hate James Yeager but I keep hearing the same things he says over and over!

"Amateurs practice until they get it right. Professionals practice until they can't get it wrong."

"The pro do not skip safety nor training."

I'd say dead because you have no gun is worse. Especially sad when you had the skills and the gear to give yourself a fighting chance but chose not to carry that day.

True! But does that training have to be a $500 James Yeager tactical ninja class?

No. Get the basics on, get marksman class, then compete in Pistol Matches to learn how to function under time stress.

If you didn't graduate from Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training you shouldn't carry. You don't have the warrior spirit or the rock hard abs required to carry for defense. Stick to pepper spray and an emergency whistle. You have to be able to drop at least 3 tangos while simultaneously driving and engaging in hand to hand with the passenger.

Leave all your handguns to the military and SWAT police professionals. They are the only ones who should be carrying military weapons of war on America's streets and nightclubs. Don't be a wannabe...leave killing to the professionals and dial 911.

I did not wait to carry until I got training but I would encourage GOOD training for everyone. I had taken a lot of private lessons for competing in IDPA and have made it to expert level in SSP/ESP divisions. However, when I started taking classes with Paul Howe, I found out that I knew how to play the IDPA game but had no idea on what to do for real world self defense/protection of my family. His classes are not that expensive and I can guaratee that you will learn a lot more than you ever expected before going. "Citizen Response to Active Shooter" and "Advanced Individual Tactics" are his two advanced pistol classes that will get you ready for what you will need to deal with in defending yourself/family along with medical for gunshot wounds. They are worth much more to you than adding another pistol to the gun safe. There are other good instructors out there but he is only 3 hours from where I live and he came highly recommended by someone that I respect very much. Vet your instructors well and get some training, you won't regret it.

:iagree:

In the DFW area, Robbie Allmon provides both live fire and realistic "force on force" training:

Training in and of itself is not bad at all. Practice is where you really become competent with your firearm. Practice can never be replaced or overdone, whether it be live or dry fire or the combination of both. Practice might increase your desire to get other training but do yourself a favor and get competent training and big prices do not always mean competent training.

That's really unfortunate but I hear it a lot. I remember talking to Bill Wilson back in the mid 90's about his vision and purpose of starting IDPA. I was one of the first 5000 members. IDPA was supposed to be a way to practice defensive situations with practical carry guns. The early clubs were just that.

Unfortunately, I don't think many of the participants in IDPA were ever taught some of the tactical reasons why scenarios insisted on such things as tactical sequence, tactical priority, slicing the pie, etc. I've also seen scenarios set up that require an improper sequence. It's too bad because there could be valuable training time there.

Everyone says 'professional this' or 'professional that'...'professional' just means you get paid for it, not that you are any good...

That is true, we have a professional community organizer in the White House.
