Re: Alien Gear Quick Draw Mount

I've had mine for 8 days now, and it has been my primary carry holster during the past week. My other "primary" is a Safariland Shadow® II Pancake Holster. The pistol is a G19, and I am left-handed (if that matters). Here's what it boils down to.....vjallen75 wrote:T.A.M. & Trey, I would like a full review after a few weeks of use. I considering retiring the safariland for the OWB and IWB AG
- The Alien Gear Cloak Mod OWB is much more convenient for daily use, but it has two (sort of) flaws:
- While easier to mount/dismount the paddle than other paddle holsters, on visual/tactile examination, the paddle also seems flimsier than my other paddle holsters. It may not be flimsier, but it seems like it is. OTH, once it is on, it doesn't feel that way.
- The only way to improve retention (tightening the four screws on the shell) also makes the gun more difficult to draw. So you have to find the amount of tension that suits you and your gun, realizing that it will be a compromise. At the "factory" settings, the gun would fall out of the holster if inverted. Tight enough to prevent that is also tight enough to slow down your draw by some perceptible amount. In contrast, the Safariland pancake relies on a thumb snap for retention. The flip side of that is that, tight or loose, the Alien is much easier for reholstering ,while reholstering with the thumbsnap is always a little bit of a production.
- The Safariland pancake holster is a MUCH better concealment holster. I carry concealed when at church (my church is posted 30.07), and because I am frequently on stage as part of the worship team, I prefer a holster that isn't going to be too obvious to observers under my shirt. The Alien holster makes for a pretty obvious bulge under an untucked shirt, while the Safariland holster hugs the gun in tightly to the body.
