(I may have been carrying before then, due to a stolen truck and then the thieves decided to try to break into the house before we could make it home. I was motivated the same as you. I had just had my second kid, and was facing the likelihood of America electing Madame President in the upcoming 2016 election and the certain persecution that was to follow. I suddenly felt the need to buy guns and ammo and get licensed to carry. Even though the Madame President thing never happened, I'm so glad that I was faced with the possibility because it woke me up to the fact that I and my family were defenseless.
