High School student accidentally detonates some kind of Molotov cocktail bomb in class, injuring himself and four other students and a teacher.

So he’s actually going to school in a classroom and that isn’t exciting enough, so he brings a bomb with him.

How does one detonate a Molotov cocktail? They are designed to start fires by spreading a burning liquid when the glass bottle breaks. Even worse than the kid "detonating" one in class, is why the police would "detonate" the others found in the house instead of just pulling the wick out and maybe pouring the gas out of it?

I am guessing this is another one where the reporter has no idea what the device was so he called it a Molotov, much like all rifles are assault weapons. I will admit it could be the police who used that term to the reporter instead of her coming up with it on her own. At least the school used the proper term for something that detonates - a homemade explosive device.

What Steve said. It was just before the Icepocalypse that Houston news reported a man had been arrested with ingredients for Molotov cocktails plus nails to go in them to make them more dangerous. Took me about 10 minutes to explain to someone what a Molotov cocktail was, that it didn't explode in the sense of a detonation, and couldn't launch nails as frag elements anywhere. That putting nails in a Molotov cocktail was about like mounting an 800-pound snowplow blade onto the front of an 84 horsepower Chevrolet Spark. It wouldn't do anything.
