That is crazy. By the time I was ten, I was not only watching my two younger brothers (8 and 5), but taking them all over the city of Philadelphia by public transportation. Usually we went to the main branch of the Library downtown and to a couple museums near it. I babysat a 9 month old and a 2 year old when I was 10yo. Geez.
