Paying for Hurricane Ike put a damper on my budget for next year, but I consider the POF a 2008 purchase even if I don't see it until March. Second on the list is a Tromix tricked-out Saiga 12 gauge...if I can find one. Third is a new .45; I'm leaning toward an STI Eagle. Fourth was gonna be an AK, but I could see picking an FAL instead.

So many guns, so little time...

I owned an Armalite AR-10 for awhile, and it was a really nice gun. I wish I had it back.

What are your thoughts on the Remington R-25 .308? I have seen them at Academy for $1500 and thought about it but do not know much about them (new to the AR dance and looking for a partner.)

There was a short but decent review of it in the November issue of American Rifleman. Beyond that, I don't know anything about the rifle and have never held one. So I'm obviously an expert.

What I do find interesting is that, even though the rifle is manufactured at the DPMS plant, they're branded and sold as Remington (Cerberus Capital Management owns Remington, DPMS, Bushmaster, and some other, smaller gun makers).

I think that's a great idea because the rifle is trying to become a crossover product. The action seems to be pure-"D" AR-10, with all the aftermarket add-ons and drop-ins available. And it takes standard AR-10 magazines; you can sure bet that DPMS mags will fit. .

But Remmy is targeting hunters, not EBR aficionados. In fact, I don't think the rifle is even available in black, only Mossy Oak. A lot has been done to trim weight, including a fluted barrel, all-Zytel furniture, and upper and lower receivers both of milled aluminum. The result is an unloaded weight of 8 lbs., 12 ozs.: not bad to carry around for a day of hunting. And in addition to .308, you can get it chambered in .243 Winchester or 7mm-08 Remington. But I'm with you: if I were looking at this rifle, .308 would be the only choice just because of all the aftermarket stuff that would be available to it.

It does have an evil pistol grip, but the stock is a standard A2 type, not a skeletonized adjustable that looks more evil. The barrel is free-floating, but the aluminum handguard is long and has no rail...again, making the rifle look a little less evil. Oh, and it comes with only a four-round mag: less evil.

The reviewer didn't much like the stock trigger but again, since it's an AR-10, you can easily change out the trigger if you choose to.

It's not quite my cup of tea, but if Remington can do a decent job of marketing it as a hunting rifle, not an EBR, I think that would be a good thing.

Thats a bummer about the wait for your rifle. Have any of you shot any steel cased ammo through any of your .308 rifles? If so did you notice anything good or bad after the fact. I ask because I acquired a CETME and ran some steel cased ammo through it this weekend with no issues what so ever. It really didn't crud my rifle up at all. I had heard it left residue or gunk in most guns but I didn't experience that problem at all. Just looking for opinions and hear say. Good luck to you and your arrival of the mighty .308.
