I stand by my post.
I would not have exited my vehicle if I saw four bangers exit a vehicle that just rear-ended me. I drive a Ford F250 Superduty diesel. Loaded down with my tools etc it goes almost 7000 lbs.
I use my truck as a weapon. I doubt a rice burning banger mobile and four bangers would handle the truck.
Herb, I have thought about these scenarios and in this one pulling a knife was not the answer. If it was for you great. Go for it. IMHO the knife suggestion was not the right one.
Anygunanywhere but probably not a knife.
I don't think anyone recommended exiting the vehicle, and it is good advice you give to avoid doing this (in most cases). Using the truck is good too.
No one suggested "pulling a knife" nor certainly not letting them take it from you -- but as you and I both have it (I have two) they would end up with meeting the knives before I let the four gang bang me or my family.
Although I would definitely be in fear of my life and great bodily harm, two knives (along with a wee bit of skill with them) and the pepper spray would likely make it an interesting fight, as long as they don't have firearms, if they insisted.
Knife techniques are worth some study. It is actually pretty difficult to even grab or punch a person who knows how to HOLD a knife.

They loved the last paragraph I added.
Hmmm...well...I wouldn't stoop to advising you to waste a pound of Bullseye "salting" the parking area just before the next dog search...would I?

If you can (and do) move the vehicle well out of the roadway, then staying in it is a good idea, but otherwise, do you want to be inside it unable to dodge quickly if somebody else slams into the existing accident?

Agreed!
Any type of weapon (vs. fists/feet) might allow you to maintain distance or retreat to a safer position to summons help.
I have a little bit of knife training...and I can honestly say... I would be loathe to try to disarm/attack someone (even an unskilled person) who was waving an edged weapon and showing any amount of determination.
Of course, common sense tells us not to deploy/reveal the weapon until absolutely necessary, for a variety of reasons.
Depending upon where I plan to go in a day...I may or may not have my 1911 on my person (I don't carry 24/7). But....I ALWAYS have my knife (thanks El Gato).

When someone asks for critique and someone alse suggests a knife I make the connection that it is suggested for self defense. You have to pull the knife for self defense.

I always carry a knife too. But I would much rather have a baseball bat, tire iron, cane or staff if faced with four gangbangers with knives. The more distance I can create the less likelihood I will be cut. If I use the knife, I will get cut. With a bat, cane or staff, I might get out of it without cuts. But in the end, you use whatever weapon you have a hand to survive.

Not really -- many times using a knife surrepticously, which isn't implied by "pull a knife", is the best method. Secreting the knife in your hand such that if you are grabbed the attacker is automatically cut has a range of uses.
One of the most difficult positions to "take away" a knife is the "reverse hold, lying along the forearm, blade out" method. The knife is largely hidden, and it is also quite a bit harder to cut your self (though not impossible) when using this method.
You only use it or show it once you are UNDER ATTACK -- at which point I am in fear of my life and getting cut with my own knife is the least of my worries.

or worse, broken into, and then have the one thing you'd wanna hang on to stolen, as well.
Depends on the safety of the area. I have a relative inexpensive gun safe that fits under the seat of my car. It is secured with a cable around the seat post. Won't stop some one with cable cutters but will keep you safe from a smash and grab type car theif.

Oh, I was telling 911 all about the fight and the knife. Did not help the response time one bit. The first responder told me the dispatcher had incorrectly advised the units I was being attacked rather than the bangers mixing it up. I would have been long dead had that been the case.
First responder thought you were being attacked and it still took 20 minutes to get there? Really gives you a sense of confidence.
