To add to this, the neighbor came to me today and said yall see those hogs running around, I said no and went back to doin what I was doing. Well they decided to come uproot my yard today its full of tracks and grass torn up with holes and lines of dirt. This makes me think though. Would you rather take the hog with a pistol or a shotgun? You dont want to chance it getting back up and hurting you so a shotgun would apply. Same with life threatening situations. Ill take any advantage I can. Doesnt matter if you have flashlights and all the gadgets, good for zombies, not good if you use if for real world and it goes to evidence with a $200 flashlight and $500 red dot. The simpler the better in this case unless you have a Saiga 12 :evil2:

Don't forget about the "Reduced Recoil" buckshot loads!!!! Shooting the reduced recoil loads is like shooting dove shot.

For zombies I think you're supposed to have an M1 and a machete. ;-)

I sure wish I had posted this before I bought the Benelli. Alot of good info which I could have used to make my decision. Ever since I bought it, I've been uncomfortable with the gun being out in the open, its power, and all the other stuff discussed in this thread. It's been in my safe ever since I got it and I think I'll revert back to my nightstand pistol. Thanks to all who participated in this.

So for you shotgun experts out there, would the Mossberg 500 Combo (w/home & field barrels) be a good defense choice?

I looked it up, and they are only about ~$300

I was thinking about getting into skeet or trap shooting, so if this gun would do both that's a winner for me.

The Mossberg 500 is a fine choice.
The combo set is ideal for a person on a budget.
Simple 1 mintue procedure to go from HD gun to sporting gun.
Oodles of aftermarket accessories.

Exactly. I'm right there with you. Although I don't think Barry and his friends are going after shotguns first, but they are coming.
I read language in two bills just before Thanksgiving. . . at least one of them is currently in committee. . . both of them cited "short-barrel", "high capacity", and "non-sporting" shotguns on the list of banned firearms. One bill left the decision of classifying "sporting" and "non-sporting" to the Attorney General.

Sure, these bills could get watered down before getting to a final vote, but the home defense shotgun is squarely in the sights of the Antis. I purchased my Mossberg 500 and an AR-15 after reading the bill. They'd both been on my wishlist but leapfrogged a few other things in priority once I saw the bills. (I almost wondered whether fighting the constitutionality of any bill would be easier that suggesting to my wife that we delay replacing our bedroom furniture for another year. )

A shotgun may be heavy but a static defender can use a bed or other furniture as a shooting rest and get in double kneeling to help with the recoil.

If I want the meat, .357Mag. If I just want the pig absolutely, undeniably dead right now and don't care about meat or hide, .243Win. If he's charging me, then 00Buck becomes an option, but I wish I'd taken some pictures of the pig I pink-misted with a hot .243 load. Blew out the exit-side shoulder, trashed the hide and wasted a *lot* of meat. 80gr at 3,600fps is a lot of energy to dump in a short distance. I could have gutted it through the exit wound without a knife.

Because they are CHEAP.

As an arm-chaired non-commando, it is my professional opinion that a shotgun is a horrible weapon as home defense weapon of choice.

1. difficult to shoot - compared to AR15
2. low round count - compared to AR15
3. unable to make precision shots (buckshots, maybe with slugs) - compared to AR15

Oh, don't fall inlove with that Hollywood cliche about racking the shotgun. If you pump your shotgun and walk out of your bedroom to investigate some intruder, expect to be fired upon as the door opens!!!

For those who still like to use shotguns since having a gun is better than nothing, at least get semi-auto - there are many reasons why a semi-auto is so much better than a pump.

Shotgun is also a terrible choice in case of zombies, only slightly better than choosing a bolt action or single shot. For those creatures, the best of the best is GSG-5P, a magazine fed, 22LR semi-auto rifle. Why? when dealing with zombies, you need to take heat shots and you need ammo, LOTS ammo!!! A GSG would do the job right. A shotgun? After a few shots, you would be out of ammo and torn apart by zombies.
