I support the idea of this bill but... I suspect I will see no benefit from it at all given reports of my employers outspoken opposition to the 2007 version. Sorry, I'm just pessimistic about it. Just call me broken and bitter.

It would not matter. 30.06 only applies when you are carrying under the authority of your CHL and you are not using that authority if you are in your car or one you control. And, since this law applies to "otherwise lawfully possessing" the weapon, it applies then.

Piney, the law would require that the alternative parking lot to be "reasonably close". I doubt any court would find the 15 minute bus ride to meet those terms.

As for parking on the educational entity lot, that is legal now. Well, under state law it is legal since anyone can have the gun in their car and premises was defined as the buildings, specifically excluding parking lots. For elementary and secondary schools, you would be in violation of federal law (a very questionable law) but there is nothing the state legislature can do about that.

Only if you don't have a CHL:

(B) Subparagraph (A) does not apply to the possession of a firearm—
(ii) if the individual possessing the firearm is licensed to do so by the State in which the school zone is located or a political subdivision of the State, and the law of the State or political subdivision requires that, before an individual obtains such a license, the law enforcement authorities of the State or political subdivision verify that the individual is qualified under law to receive the license;

Of course, (A) also requires that the firearm or its components have previously moved in interstate commerce, so if you smelted the iron and filed out the gun (legally) in your garage, you've got nothing to worry about there anyway.

This is a good bill that will get us an inch closer to workplace carry. Since I ride my bicycle to work nearly every day, it doesn't help me much. I think a bill that looks just like this but doesn't say anything about parking lots but simply says "premises" or "property" instead would be ideal. That's what we need eventually (gets us the rest of the way). Either the employer must allow us to carry on our persons while on their property, or they must provide a weapons locker.

There are a lot of days when I am on my bicycle and wouldn't mind having a gun with me. It's a 40-minute trip each way and you are a whole lot more vulnerable on a bicycle than you are in a car, especially when it comes to street-corner thugs.

Kudos for this bill. Its passage is a first down in this fight. The goal line is workplace carry. Let's keep moving the ball.
