No way I could handle having all that junk in my pockets or on my belt. However I do have my messenger bag with me much of the time and I should probably be carrying spare ammo and mags in there. I have a spare mag for the "car gun" in my wife's car totaling 33 rounds in the car. Considering the fact that I have 5 magazines for the "car gun" I guess I should be carrying more in there as well.

Normally I am just carrying 7 or 8 in the gun that I am carrying with me and no spare magazines. I'm sure some of you guys have an easier time concealing that much guns and ammo than I do, all of course depending on clothing, body type, and what activity you are engaged in.

I won't disparage those who carry less but I never carry less than one fully-charged, spare magazine. If I'm carrying a 1911, make that two spares. Occasionally, I'll carry a spare gun in high risk areas. So that generally means I'm carrying no less than 24 rounds on my person.

I don't pretend or in anyway imagine myself to be a part of law enforcement. But the reality is, if something goes down, I will be on my own until the police get there. We also know that most violent encounters now involve more than one attacker. With that in mind, I subscribe to the philosophy that one cannot have too much ammunition unless he's on fire or trying to swim.

I always carry one reload for every weapon. So, I have 5 rounds on a speed strip for the S&W 642 in my pocket. If carrying the SA 1911, I have one mag in my pocket in addition to the one in the weapon.

I always have more in the car with the car gun.

Having spent 6 years in the USMC infantry, I learned a long time ago how to beat feet when outgunned. 10 .38 rounds and 15 .45 rounds are enough to let me get out of the situation unless I am backed into a bank vault.

Usually have one spare mag on my person and one in the car for either my PX4 Storm or my XD 9SC.

Feel confident (confident I won't ever have to draw; but having the ammo the to, say, walk around a tractor trailor and pop every tire is a nice feeling.)

For me, it's not about the round count. It's about having a backup plan in case of a mag failure, ammo failure, multiple BGs, etc....I'm by no means looking for a gunfight but I also refuse to be a victim due to not having enough. That being said:

Kimber Ultra Carry - 8 in the gun with (2) 8 round Wilsons on the hip.

Glock 21 - 14 in the gun, extra 13 rounder on the hip

Glock 20 - 16 in the gun, extra 15 rounder on the hip

Glock 29 - 13 in the gun, extra 15 round G20 mag on the hip

Glock 19 - 18 in the gun, extra 15 rounder on the hip

Glock 26 - 14 in the gun, extra 13 on the hip in a 10 round mag with a +3 extension

I also carry one reload for each of my 3 autoloaders and 1 revolver.

Glock 22: 15+1 and an extra 15 round magazine
Glock 19: 15+1 and an extra 17 round magazine
Kel-Tec P11: 10+1 and an extra 10 round magazine
Taurus 85 Ultralite: 5 in the cylinder and a spare speedloader

If I need more than this, then my luck is very bad, I'm not paying attention, or I should be carrying a rifle or shotgun.

DeSantis makes a neat double magazine carrier for the ankle that makes it much more comfortable to carry a spare mag.

Needless to say, it works better with slacks than with shorts, and it's a little slower than a belt carrier, but a lot faster than accessing the magazine in your glove box in the parking lot.

Pulling your sock up over the rig (instead of underneath as shown in the DeSantis picture) greatly reduces the chances it might be recognized for what it is if the cuff of your pants rides up a bit when seated.

Multiple offenders are common in robbery situations, and bad guys aren't always instantly disabled by hits (let alone misses) like they are on TV. The number of rounds a reasonable person would consider a good idea goes up pretty quickly when you start taking these things into account.

, point well taken. With all due respect, this mature (old) Texas CHL holder is not the law and really has no business knowingly going into dicey areas or looking for shootouts. I'll grant you two mags/cylinders minimum carry.

All you younger ninja warriors should carry whatever amount of ammo that makes you comfortable as you go about your rounds.

The more of your posts I read...the more I like you. Same goes for me. I carry ammo Barney Fife style.

So I'm not the only one carrying a j-frame! Shoot and scoot. No waiting around for any reinforcement.

My Taurus PT111 9MM is a 10+1 pistol.
I carry 11 in the gun at all times.
I have a 10 round magazine in my Kydex single mag
belt holster.
I have an extra 10 round mag in my seat belt holster.

So I always have 21 rounds on me, with 10 more in the truck.

A minimum of 21 rounds of Speer Gold Dot SD JHP should be
enough to hold me in most social situations.

Here's "Skiprr's Deep Thought of the Day." Mull over the term "gunfight." Considering your choice to carry a gun, what do you think is the most important component of the term? "Gun" or "fight"?

Gabe Suarez has commented that in his years as a trainer he's found most students to be "hardware-centric" rather than "software-centric." By that he means that we more often believe "gun" is more important than "fight."

Suarez is specifically commenting on training versus equipment, of course, but I'll posit that an extra mag or two, a knife, a good flashlight, a can of pepper spray on your keychain, even a BUG are all elements (not to ignore training) of "fight," not "gun." They're preparation for an "in the unlikely event of" incident.

The thing with a firearm is that, once you go to gun in the face of a threat, no further escalation is possible. You can't take it back and you can't call a time-out. There's no referee and there are no rules. If you're prepared to go to that extent, you'd also better be prepared to win the fight, whatever the fight proves to be. And we all know Murphy has a way of quickly changing what we expect...or even what we initially perceive.

Part of that "software" training Suarez was talking about is what to do after you are forced to pull the trigger: 1) stop the immediate threat; 2) scan for additional threats; 3) improve your position, if possible (e.g., nearby cover); 4) reload; 5) scan for threats; then 6) call 911. And scan for threats. And keep scanning. I'd personally never want to be greeted, whether by a responding LEO or by the initial threat's MS-13 brother who'd seen the encounter and decided to weigh-in, if my gun is less than fully-charged and operational.
