Same thing with my P11 Keltec. They'll just think it's a staple gun.

I like the cz-52. Dirt cheap, and one of the best penetrators, aside from maybe the fn 5.7

I've actually looked at those recently. I kinda like the 7.62 Tok, but is the gun reliable?

You might want to look at Ruger P 95 or SR 9. They are relatively inexpensive, built like a brick and very reliable.
I would also seccond the Safepacker suggestion. I carry in one quite a bit and the only time anyone has said anything was when a fellow customer in Cheaper that Dirt asked me how I liked it because he was considering getting on.

Most any polymer frame pistol.
I'm partial to Glocks for car guns. They will take a LOT of abuse...not that you should test that, but if the need arises, the design is capable of it.

I was a bit of a fence-sitter regarding truck carry until I got a Console Vault. Now I leave my S&W 638 J-frame in there all the time. You'd probably have to have a cutting torch to break into that vault - very secure.
As for a good car gun, I settled on my J-frame because it is quick and simple to use if I ever needed it - grab, point, bang. Plus it's small enough to slip in my pocket if needed.
Been thinking about getting a second, cheaper 5-shot 2-inch barrel revolver to keep in the truck and keep this S&W in my home office (which is a bit farther from my bedroom closet gun safe than I'd like).

Extremely. The CZ series, all I have touched, are top quality. Much of the 7.62x25 out there is also steel core, and has one of the highest FPS i've seen on pistols. Front heavy, but reliable.
