I've been running around in cheap chinese knock-off jungle boots I bought at an army/navy store. They were $20, and every bit as comfortable as what I paid for. I would not recommend these. I'm just too frugal not to wear them.

I bought them to go with a black crushed velvet toga I wore at a toga party last year. I was a "visigoth" - key word being goth.

I normally wear a pair of Wolverine steel toed hiking boots.

They have a hard rubber sole.

Having a bunch of Tae Kwon Do experience, I thought this would be a great combo. Steel toe, for a boot to the head, and other sensitive parts of the body.
Hard rubber sole for raking shins.

I'm over-weight and out-of-shape, but I can still kick to my head level, and I still retain the muscle memory.

A few years ago I had shoulder surgery, and during my recovery I wandered around the house and neighborhood barefoot or in light slippers. I began to experience extreme pain in my right foot and went to see the doctors. The diagnosis - Plantar Fasciitis, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantar_fasciitis" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) which they said was immediately caused by my months long barefoot habit.

I climbed poles for the phone company for more the 20 years and never had any problems with my feet, but two years of working for TSA standing up and walking on concrete floors all day followed by a couple of months of barefoot "relaxation" did me in. These days I wear orthotic everything, including bedroom slippers.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Bates.

I wear Bates GX-8 tactical boots. They are "airport-friendly" (even the safety-toe version) and are offered in winter, safety-toe, black and dessert sand versions. Academy sporting goods carries them for $99.00. I haven't found them cheaper anywhere.

They have excellent gripping soles, and great ankle support. I commute on a motorcycle, and these are the next best thing to Alpine Stars racing boots for a poor man like me, IMO. They're as comfy as sneakers, yet the smooth black leather toe looks like casual dress shoes when you have slacks on, so I can wear them at the office where there's a "no athletic shoes" dress code.

I keep two pair on hand...one for weekends and rough duty, one polished up for daily office wear.

P.S. The side zipper style is a huge plus. You don't wear out the laces by constantly re-tying and they are fast on, fast off, with all the support and fit of full laces.

On my feet all day, every day, I've found that Red Wings work best. They may cost more than cheap Walmart boots, but they last me between 2 and 3 years.

I've always loved the Corcoran 10" Field Boot. Man they are comfortable and last forever.
