Thanks for all the advice everyone. I decided to go with a Ruger LCP. Right now I have a pocket holster and it just looks like I have a cell phone in that pocket. Been carrying for a few days now.

Being a health professional myself, I also appreciate that. However, ratshot or birdshot can be just as lethal yet not as effective in stopping a perp. In other words, you have all the disadvantages without the advantages of a firearm. I have seen my share of near-death experiences in the E.R. from birdshot and .22 lr. They are no joke.

Instead, I suggest that you carry pepper spray. It is totally non-lethal, requires zero shooting skill to deploy as the spray pattern is big, and can be effective in stopping non-pcp/lsd fueled attacks. They are small, cheap, and can be operated with one hand, leaving your other hand free to draw a gun, if necessary.

You may opt for a tazer, but keep in mind that tazers are less-lethal, not non-lethal. Plus, they're expensive. Personally, if I had to choose between a gun or pepper spray, I'd choose the pepper spray. I'd carry a pepper spray before I'd carry a gun. In other words, I'd carry a gun and pepper spray or I would not carry a gun at all. Shooting people just ain't my style and if I could avoid it, I'd rather not shoot anyone. I'd rather save lives.

Would your particular career future be any different than a person who is not a health professional?

Pharmacists generally seem to be able to keep their jobs after shooting armed robbers.

I am an EMT for a Federal agency, a healthcare professiona(in a way)l. My CHL weapon, which I can only carry off duty, is always loaded with 230gr hollow points. I worry about my life more than my job. I carry because I am willing to use deadly force when necessary to protect myself and my family.

Not everyone has a license that can be revoked at the whim of a supervising board. Engineers, lawyers, etc are in the same position.
