It's a new age we live in. I kinda realized it when cops stormed that plane at JFK a few weeks ago. CNN was following tweets from a passenger on the plane... pictures and all... Amazing huh?
fyahhype RT @bairet: Who needs CNN? Someone is live-blogging the ongoing shooting and search for the second suspect #utshooting http://bit.ly/byXR07" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; less than 20 seconds ago via web

Another tweet ... funny one, said UT better put metal detectors at all entrances

Yes, besides working at a law firm, owning a computer company etc., I ran MSN's chat server security, and worked for MSN since around 1996 too as a sideline job ... I tied up MSN's legal dept and FBI agents a full day once where the FBI would ask the MSN people technical questions on how they got info on a guy in Pakistan and his plans, they'd ask me, then it would be discussed with the MSN attorneys, concerned with "privacy issues" , then explained to the FBI "rlol" My NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) has expired from there now lol)

Also RT @KXAN_News: Siren going off again at UT, reminding students to stay inside unless instructed by APD

Also "second" suspect search ongoing ... due to differing descriptions:

One says yellow shirt and blue jeans with weapon .... other said black ...

Just heard tv report that possible second suspect is because the police received conflicting descriptions of shooter:
- one dressed in black with ski mask is likely the deceased
- second described man in yellow shirt and blue jeans also with a firearm of some type?

Then, of course, my cable box just went dead :mad5

Oh well, guess that's it from the AR news update desk ... need to get back to work anyway

Me too ... I'm signing off ...

Good way to get updates now through Twitter "second suspect" is getting about 4,600 posts per minute, most duplicative, but very up-to-date

Who thinks the second suspect might have been an armed citizen running into the PCL to stop the active shooter, then got lost, then saw on his smartphone that all the police have their crosshairs on him - now he's locked in a room trying to convince the APD he's really not a bad guy? Hey, it could happen, that's all I'm sayin ;-)

I'm curious about the time frame of this incident, from the time a shooter was seeing jogging along the sidewalk with a weapon until he shot himself. It's great that no one was shot and it seems it was over with pretty quickly. Also, do the campus security police have weapons?

Yes, the UT campus has a full police department with commissioned officers, their own dispatch and station, etc. They have walking, bicycling, and motor patrols. It's everything you'd expect from a large police department.

The university is closed.

Due to the events of today, the campus is closed. Unless you are needed for essential operations, all faculty, staff and students are urged to leave campus. Students who live on campus may return to their residence halls.

Because the area around the Perry Castenada Library (PCL) is an actively investigated crime scene and due to the difficulty of navigating that portion of the campus, it is urged that area be avoided. As you leave the campus, please exit the campus from north exits. Employees who ride buses to work may catch the bus at Dean Keeton or at on 23rd and San Jacinto. If you are in buildings near the PCL, please exit buildings from exits away from PCL.

On time sheets, please list time away from campus today as Emergency Leave. Also, please check the campus Emergency Web site (http://www.utexas.edu/know/2010/09/28/emergency_alert/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) for additional updates.

All other campus employees are urged to continue at work and to exercise care until the all clear is given.

Please direct any questions to HRSC@austin.utexas.edu or call 471-HRSC (4772)

Like Hoi Polloi stated, UT does have its own PD. When i left in 2007, I dont remember seeing too many officers on foot around the PCL or on bike. That location is probably one of the busiest locations on campus since the main gym (gregory), the largest dorm (Jester), PCL and the business school are all at that intersection. They do have numerous emergency call stations and if you hit one of those, PD is there very rapidly. I think people just got complacient. I remember walking to class with the tunes on just minding my own business and not seeing whats going on around me. There are so many people around you, in addition the multiple buses and cars going past you, i can see why it took some time for people to register what was going on.

Now that it's been confirmed that thankfully, no other injuries have been suffered...

... Do you think this will wake up some of the politicians in Austin to Campus Carry next year?

Look people, It CAN HAPPEN, IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD!

I was riding my bicycle heading for the UT campus (as I commute through there pretty often) when I saw all the police showing with sirens blaring. I was at the edge of the campus when the police cars cut off traffic.

Before I took the CHL course I would have hung around to see what was "going down". One of the things I remember my instructor saying was "run away from gunfire" ... I beat it out of there and rode my bike around the campus today. Thanks all of you instructors out there for the training on how to avoid trouble.

Good choice. The police were already responding, no reason for you to put yourself in harms way.

8:10 shots fired outside in front of tower
8:15 sirens and alerts go out
8:25 school on lockdown
8:40-ish shoots himself in library on 6th floor

roughly 30 minutes, and relatively, a lot of ground covered in that time for a "target rich area", had the time of day been different.

So what you're saying is... the police didn't make it there in 30 seconds, and shoot the guy instantly...

In fact, he had 30 minutes of free reign on the campus, and would have had more, had he not decided to off himself.
That's 30 minutes on a campus that has it's own police force, on-campus...

Wake up people. The Police are only there to clean up the mess afterwords. Very rarely do they make it there on time to stop anything like this. THIS is why we need to be able to defend ourselves in these "Safe" "Gun Free Zones"...
