That "breath of fresh air" always smelled an awful lot like flatulence to me.

I've bit my tounge on this for a while but sometimes a man must say what he is thinking Countdown was a great show hosted by a passionate journalist who happened to be liberal, yes his bias showed in his broadcasts, but the same can be said for Hannity and O'Reilly
it amazes me that no matter which side people are on they all seem to think only the other persons crap stinks

IMHO, Olbermann was worse because his mudslinging style was merely a retaliation to the mudslinging styles so prevelant on FoxNews. His entire show was a giant, screaming "I know you are but what am I?" adult version of a tiff between a pair of pre-schoolers.
No doubt, Hannity, O'Reilly, and especially Beck are quite often equally as childish and loony. But Olbermann - instead of proving the wrongness of the FoxNews "style" - simply jumped into the same rotting, fetid pool of filth with them. Lawrence ODonnel and Rachel Maddow are also deeply immersed in this group.
And please spare me the description of any of these folks as "passionate journalists". Even "advocacy journalism" is a stretch. The word "journalism" really shouldn't be in the same sentence with these folks. Punditry. Muckraking. Mudslinging. Partisan. Use any of those words combined with your choice of "Passionate" or "crazy-as-a-loon" descriptive modifiers and you can come up with some Mad Libs method of describing these cable news blowhards.
Sorry, don't mean to "go off" on your post or anything. But I have a degree in journalism and worked in the industry for 10-plus years and what these people are doing is NOT journalism. I watch all of them in small doses just so I can at least try to keep up in some small way with the current zeitgeist. But I wouldn't trust a word any of them say without triple confirmation from reliable sources.
My gut tells me these folks are bad for our country, for our public discourse, for our democracy. But hopefully that gut reaction just gives them too much credit. I hope they are just a sign of the times, a hopefully soon-passing broader fad of combining "reality" with "entertainment" all while pretending to be truly serious (instead of constantly reminding your audience that you're really just a comedian like Jon Stewart so often does). These folks are to news and journalism what "Survivor" is to real-life survival or "American Idol" is to good music.

Actually, I can't stand Hannity. He's a whiner. O'Reilly isn't a whiner, but he's bombastic as heck, and he's not
that conservative. And Geraldo isn't conservative at all. Shep Smith is not sympathetic to gun rights. But neither have I ever claimed that Fox News was anything other than what it is — the
ONE remotely conservative news network in a television news landscape awash in leftist propaganda. That is why I reacted the way I did. CNN/ABC/CBS/NBC/MSNBS aren't even centrist. They are all left of center, which is why it cracks me up when people say that broadcast new networks are all conservative.
For the record, Olberman is a retard.

That's not fair. He appears to be solidly mediocre in the intellect department, and his ability to rant incoherently is second to none.

this blowhard doesn't deserve TWO threads devoted to his swiftly sinking career, but I couldn't pass on the chance to yet again dance for joy that this man is out of a job

Keith Olbermann has been fired by a cable network. Again.
Current TV released a statement saying it was parting ways with the outspoken liberal news pundit, citing a difference in values. Olbermann then shot back with a statement of his own

Among the charges and counter charges between Überputz.... I mean Olberman and the network: They're mad because he fired EIGHT limo car services in just a few months......because he didn't like that the limo drivers tried to talk to him. And he's supposed to be a man of the people? Yeah right.

The man is a napoleonic weenie. If anyone wants my private definition of that, PM me. It's not for the public board.
