It happened more or less to me. The manager came to check the form and did not see that I was a green card holder, and approved. Two hours later he called my phone asking for the "3-bills" but that was all. I carry the GD just because federal law says is a felony not to carry. Anyway, I got 3 new guns this year and not a problem, as long I have the GD number, my DL and CHL (plus the "3-bill", which I always have a current copy, just in case of a SPETACULAR bargain, as always is....)

Silverwings wrote:So after several calls today I told one of the managers "That's fine I'll call the local ATF office to see how is it that I am elegible for a CHL but I'm not so to buy a gun".
20 minutes later they call me back to tell me everything checks out and I am good to stop by the store and pick up the gun.
So here I am at this very moment, but wait, they want to run a background check on me. I told them, hey here is my CHL remember? They are telling me that they need to run my background check or no sale...

They just run the check, they are telling me the system will not give them an answer until tomorrow, that the status is "delayed". I am going home, very frustrated. I will call the ATF as soon as I get home.
Silverwings; If you're close to DFW during the holidays, there will be a Market Hall Gun Show 11/26 & 11/27.
You've waited this long..... what's another week? Plus, you should be able to beat the Academy price without much effort, and
a lot less stress and hassel.

They never ran the NICs check on me .. In fact when I presented my CHL card the guy selling me the gun made it clear that it made things easier.

The manager called me today to let me know that NOW everything was in line and I could go pick it up, he assured I would get the sale price of last week and told me that if I needed anything else he would personally make sure I don't have to wait, he was very apologetic. I wanted the gun so I went and picked it up, the guy would not stop apologizing, he walked me to the register to pay for it as they always do, and he would not stop saying they were sorry but they needed to be sure and blah blah blah... I told him "I am here doing business because I really want this gun and you happened to have a good price last week when I came to buy it, but be sure this is the last time I come to your store for any type of business", paid for it and walked away with my lovely Glock 23.

Yesterday when I came back home all frustrated I called the ATF at their 24/7 1-800 number, explained the whole situation to the person that answered the call, he said that being a CHL holder they don't have to run a back ground check, meaning they are not required to run it, but if they want to they have all the right to do so. He basically told me, there's nothing we can do, good luck. Felt I did not get the support I was looking for but oh well, what could I do anyways? Good thing is that I have my beloved G23, what a nice gun, so well made!! :thumbs2:

I know how you feel as many legal immigrants to this country have done to make sure they follow the rules. Its because of 9 11 and the surge of illegals in the last 25 yrs who come to this country and break the rules. Many have criminal backgrounds and do their straw purchases to send back home South. The system we have is not perfect and people who work in places like Academy are not expected to be 100 percent on the spot regarding what s the right thing to do. Many employees are only paid minmum wage, what can one expect. They always err on the side of wrong in things like immigration status. Its a cover your a... mode until corporate sort it out.

Anyways, im glad they made it right. And you got the gun for the price you are happy with. America still is the best place to buy guns, unlike other countries God knows what ---they will not even say sorry or being apologetic. You even have to bribe something in govt to get a license or know someone. And waiting period could take longer unless you bribe some more. Thats a big fact jack! ANd thanks to Texas , we are a gun friendly state unlike California and the rest of them. Kudos to you and Academy for making it right.

I just broke down and bought my first Glock, a 30. Yeah, it is worth it.

Dang, I had hoped I would never have to say that...

Yeah I had the runaround a few times from other FFLs under similar circumstances (although I've never bought from Academy). Glad it worked out.

The thing I always remember while jumping through those hoops was - in my own country I cannot even buy a shotgun to use for home defense, MUCH LESS a handgun - and now to be living in a place where you can get a licence to carry - absolutely awesome !! So a few hurdles but when you think about what you are actually doing - and that you would never get anywhere close to that in your own country... I found that very humbling and felt, well, very honored. I'm sure alot of expats on this forum felt the same way at a certain stage in their CHL/firearm-buying journey ?

Anyhow - congrats ! I'm sure the G23 will be the first of many :-)

Time changes in all things. Back then it was a breeze to buy a gun from a dealer but after the 9 11 attack they have been careful to allow people to buy guns. Although its easier to get one from a private seller in Texas as long as he sells you the gun. There is no law barring one from selling his gun to someone as long seller think you are not a felon. If i sell my gun to someone i make sure he is a legal state resident and i get his signature and DL no on a deed of sale. Nothing is sure safe nowadays. The little inconvenience you encountered in Academy is but normal. We just have to take it as it is. Be patient and happy and shoot safely.

I don't disagree that Texas is pretty gun friendly but don't fool yourself. Many of the rest of them are as gun friendly and in some cases more so. Every state has it pluses and its minus. California, NJ, NW, MA have a bunch more negatives that positives. Some of the rest balance out very close to Texas, some better, some worse.

Wow that is a crazy story - very not cool of them to stand in the way like that. I'm glad it worked out for you in the end finally.

Our local Academy has always been good to everyone I know, and we're literally right on the border (El Paso). They dont sell any "Tactical" rifles at either of their stores here though, since its really close to the border ("company policy"), which really stinks. Typically they have MUCH better prices and selection than our local shops, but there is only one local shop I care for anyway. It really bums me out to hear they pulled this stunt on you. :banghead:
