You need to move there full time, get a caretaker, or accept the fact people will break in. It's not right but that's the way it is.
If I wanted to do something similar near a known smuggling route, I would ask the neighbor if I could leave a travel trailer on his property in exchange for letting him hunt my property when I'm away. When I was there, I would move the travel trailer to my property, and move it back to his place when I leave.

Does the property get a cellular network signal? What about a game / trail camera aimed at the door that you can view remotely?

This is the risk manager in me talking. Scary thing is, if you go the unlocked route hoping no one will tear things up to break in and then a crime is committed in the cabin such as an assault, rape or murder, you may be held liable for negligence for not securing the cabin and making it available.
I know it is crazy and I don't think it is right but you never know in this day and time.

All kidding aside. I have friends, who have a hunting cabin on some land near the area you mention. They tried locking it up tighter than fort knox only to have everything destroyed. What they do not is leave it locked "not with deadbolt" but cheap pad lock, and the building completely empty of all items. Normally when they return, the lock has been removed and the building used. But still in decent condition. Since they have started doing this, the only issue they have with the illegals now, is all the trash they leave behind.

I would have never had that thought in a 1000 years.

Most wouldn't Wildbill. It's crazy but a vacant building is considered an "attractive nuisance". The owner can be held liable for bodily injury that occurs within such structure if they do not take proper steps to secure the property. It's crazy that a property owner can be held liable when people are trespassing but it happens.

RioGrandeShooter what direction from Valentine is your cabin? I have friends that live south of there and can assure you that you are going to have traffic on your place. Anything you leave in the cabin that can be stolen will be, even the commode and plumbing to it if you have one. South of Valentine is a very well used drug crossing on the river. The Feds know it but can not stem the traffic coming over due to the remoteness of the crossing. They do have sensors on the trail but the runners know this. Good luck with your cabin.
