I don't know this for sure, but I suspect there's about as much chance of the plastic of the PMAGS breaking down as there is of the metal mags getting cracked or corroded.

The only AR magazine I have every had fail was an aluminum mag that split along the spine causing a double feed. I've run over 15k rounds through various P-Mags and have never had an issue with them. If running drills on concrete or asphalt, dropping metal AR mags is a good way to smash or distort a feed lip. P-mags will take that kind of abuse and keep right on running. If a P-mag feedlip is damaged enough to not hold the round or cause a malfunction it will absolutely be noticeable (cracked, chipped, etc), and with metal mags, a bent feedlip may or may not be readily apparent.
