If I am awake, it's on me. If asleep, near me. I was asked once by a co-worker why I carry everyday. My response "Does your truck have a jack?" His response, "Yes, so what?", "So, when you left the house this morning you planned on getting a flat?" He looked at me like I had three heads until you could see the comprehension slowly appear across his face.

I don't even wear shoes in the house. I put them on when going outside to protect my feet from nails, hot concrete etc.

I have adequate sight lines and a 76lb Lab/Pit mix with territorial issues who will be glad to show you the errors of your way should you decide to kick in my front door.
I also have four guns concealed and secured with magnets within arm's reach throughout the house which I consider an appropriate precaution.

I haven't open carried at home in a long time. When I first moved to my rural haven the coyotes were so thick I didn't know what they were. It was like crowd noise, instead of individual voices.

Once I figured out I wasn't being overrun by zombie hordes, I decided to acclimate myself better to the evening music. The drill was grab a flashlight, holster my .45, and head for the fields at midnight on a moonlit night.

The point of the game was to leave the flashlight off and navigate by moonlight. The .45 was on my hip because I'm red-blooded, have a pulse, and I'm American. Not because I really felt I needed it. At least not until one night.

Once I got on the other side of a few trees from coyotes having a party. I was probably 50 feet away. What sounds like yips from a quarter mile away is actually more like a coughing sound when you're close.

If you can listen to that daemonic hacking without clearing your .45 from the leather, if you can leave your flashlight off when others are screaming for flood lights, if you can defy the coyote in the field and the household pup mugging for table scraps and treat those two impostors just the same - well, you're a better man than I, Gunga Din. It gave me serious willies, but it helped me learn to keep my city-boy hackles from rising every time a coyote sang out.

When it was just me in the great Central Texas outback, I carried how I pleased at home. Even if I had visitors, including our level-headed Sheriff's deputies, nobody misunderstood my intentions. Generally, there was nobody to notice, and I have neighbors who open carry all manner of shooting iron on their land, also without bothering a soul.

Then there were two of us at home, and I became more discrete with handguns. Then there were three, and then a fourth. The guns went under lock and key.

The two newcomers are now grown and have CHL's of their own, as do I since yesterday.

And once again open carry at home is no big deal. Nobody there to bug me, at least not as long as I remember to take out the trash, leave the seat down, make the bed...

I think the key factor is whether or not open carry will disturb the general peace. If not, lawfully on your own property, be safe in the manner that suits you.

I generally do not carry in my home but it's on the coffee table next to my recliner. When the doorbell rings, it's on my hip as I'm answering the door. My wife doesn't care and my 8 year old daughter doesn't care whether it's on me or on the coffee table. They are used to it and feel comfort that I am in control.

I carry in the house about 75% of the time. Mostly a G17 in a Comp-Tac Infidel with a Wilderness Belt. Sometimes I wear basketball shorts around the house, toss on the belt and the G17, or sometimes I will put a J frame in by front pocket in an A Holster brand kydex pocket pouch.

If I am going outside for any reason or for any length of time, I put on a pistol... period. If I have to walk out to the mail box, I toss on basketball shorts or jeans, put the j frame in my pocket and go out. I almost never OC while out in the yard, but I have a time or two just to try it out. CC just gives you so much more advantage.

Am I paranoid? What do I have to be paranoid about? I have 18 rounds of "Get Thee Hence" on my side.

A good reminder. Because you never know when answering the door could be the last thing you do in life...

Ok do I have a gun on my person at home? Most of the time no. Is a gun near or withing reach at home? Yes.

I am a big guy so I am not usually carrying a gun on or in the waist anyway. I carry a CCW bag everywhere I go. I dont care if you call it a manpurse, murse, whatever I carry one. I do believe belt carry is the best option but for me it just doesnt always work. The thing with bag carry is the bag has to stay with me and on me at all times. I wont get to much into that but might make a separate post on it.

You said it.... I was thinking it. I too have 2 large dogs with territorial issues as well and a cache of weapons within the confines of my home... I do however carry on my property once I leave the threshold of the door. (Back or Front yard)

I do not have a cache of weapons or an arsenal. I have a gun collection.
