I was 37 when my son was born - our only child. I just spent a couple of hours this afternoon playing with my 2 year old granddaughter, and cajoling my 3 month old grandson into smiling and giggling with me. I'm "Poppa" to them. My wife is "Nana".

I wasn't too much younger than 39 when my first was born. Will be graduating HS next year. We got married a bit "later" and then waited on purpose, knowing we wanted children eventually. Truth is, most (IMO) men are never "ready" before it happens. "Terrified to start, but wanting kids" was a good description for me.... Once it happens, just go with it. Life will never be the same. In most of the important ways it changes dramatically for the better, assuming you and your spouse have a solid relationship. Then one day you'll notice them ready to leave the nest and get all choked up, wondering how big a hole that will leave. It happens in the blink of an eye, so, enjoy every moment.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Most truly "scared" I have ever been in my life?
The moment we arrived home with our first child, walked in the house and closed the door.
OMG! What do we do now? Sweaty hands, racing heart, tunnel vision...
Thank God for Mother-in-laws!

Just wanted to chime in again, it's obvious from the majority of replies, that several of us waited until later in life to bring new life into this world. Don't get into the mindset that you are old and set in your ways. Children will quickly take you out of it. Mine just graduated from HS is an Eagle Scout. And planning his college career. It only seems like a couple of weeks ago he was so excited to go to first grade, that he cried when he didn't get "homework" on his first day. I don't feel any older than I did that day even though 12 years have flown by. Children are the fountain of youth, and they provide the proudest, as well as the most embarrasing moments in your life.
Revel in it all I have always said "You can't love your children too much"

Congrats!
What a joy, happy for you!
Don't fear, my wife and I were childless but finally were blessed with an adopted baby boy when we were both 45.
He is 9 years old now, if we were younger, we'd get another one.
Your child will be a blessing to you.

Congrats to you. When you find out whether it's a boy or girl:
Girl: Start saving for the wedding
Boy: Start saving for the extra car insurance

Congrats! It has been a long time since mine were born. My first great grandchild came this year. You will have the opportunity to mold the mind of a new human being and that is a special challenge as well as a blessing. Teach your child to be the kind of person you want to be around and you'll be fine.

There are fewer words in my life that make me as happy as the word, "Daddy", when I hear it from my little girl.

If you would like some practice I have a teenage boy I will give you!
Kidding aside. You will wonder why you didn't have kiddos sooner. Congratulations!

Congratulations!
The day I learned I was to be a father for the first time my Pops took me to church. We talked about the miracle that a child is. We talked about the help I would need to be a good father. We talked about how to anticipate and meet my wife's needs.
This was a three way conversation.
