RocTrac,

You're a lucky man. Your wife allows you to have a gun, even though she doesn't want access to one. My wife won't even allow any gun to be in the home. I gave all my guns away to my Dad. I have a CHL and a NRA membership, but NO GUNS!!! I'll carry once a week when I visit my Dad and we go fishing together. He'll loan me one of his guns (which used to be mine). I even showed her the crime statistics from our neighborhood in a "nice" part of town; 1 murder and half a dozen rapes a year in a small area with less than 300 houses! This isn't a "bad" neighborhood, either. There are $200k to $500k homes here. Nope, she's not swayed by logic (is any woman ever swayed by logic? no, i'm not sexist, just frustrated). Yes, I suppose I could just override her and keep a gun in the house anyways, but how long do ya think I'll be in the doghouse for that? Yes, I'm 'whipped, I know... but what can I say? I married a gal who is prettier than any swimsuit model I've ever seen in any magazine, so can you blame me for being 'whipped? (argh). Women, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.

:banghead:

P.S. I'm not allowed to hunt "cute" animals either. No "killing" Bambi, Thumper, nor Porky Pig. It's been so long that I don't remember the taste of venison anymore....

A friend of a friend was at home with her 2 children when someone broke into their home. She has a blog and wrote about it here Linky

With the rise of home invasion and random violence in the world, you never know when you will need to protect yourself which is why I carry at home and out in the world. If I could carry in the office I work at I would, but it is federal property so that won't happen. My friend said her husband is now talking about getting a gun for self defense, but only at home. I don't push, but gave her this forum for more info and talk about what I am doing. My wife is finally going to a basic "101" handgun class with me tonight. I took a CHL class in April, received my plastic in September, and it has taken this long for her to agree to go to this class, was not pushy, but patient. She is not anti-gun, just ambivalent at the moment. Her cousin constantly talks about being armed and is what basically convinced me to get my CHL.

Guys, I really appreciate your situations. One other thing to take into account. It is not that women don't appreciate a logical argument but to them this is an emotional topic. God made women to nurture life not take it. That is ONE big obstacle to overcome. Some women are nurturers, some women are warriors, and some women can do both, . Some can articulate their reasons for being anti gun some the vast majority (I believe) don't understand themselves why they don't like guns. This why I really emphasize an empathy based conversation to try to get her articulate the "why" only then will she be able to change her mind if she is going to.

Well said, CompVest.

Compvest,

You do have a very good point. Most of the guys here will think of logical reasons first. It tends to be the way both guys and conservatives think. And women do not all (or any?) think the same way.

So, addressing the why question might be a very good method. Going with her feelings is definitely something to be considered.

Another way might be to address the feelings indirectly. Get a decent 22 and just take her out plinking (or as close as you can get to it). Showing her how shooting can be fun with no pressure might also make her a little more receptive to participating.

And at the very worst, it will help when you want a new toy.

This, if true, is indeed a sad post...for all concerned.

CompVest said "God made women to nurture life, not take it."

This is true. But just as a rational protective parent puts their children in car seats and
doesn't let them play in the highway with knives, a woman should realize that should a
home invastion or carjacking occur, she needs to meet armed evil with armed self defense.

The defense of children should not be left up to an armed husband. He's not always going
to be home when the front door is kicked in at midnight.

Point understood. I totally believe that, with very few exceptions, every mother would fight to her last breath for her children. However, they may not be able to get the point that they could take a life as this is just alien to them. I have complete respect for them. I wish I could get all of the good guys/gals to understand that their life is far more valuable than any BG's life. Unfortunately that isn't going to happen, so I am contenting myself to just try and get people to acknowledge MY RIGHT to protect myself using firearms if I choose as my Constitutional right.

Agree about the instruction. Most of my female students have migrated, after teaching, in picking a LW .38 or .357 with a 2-3
inch bbl., as in a K or J frame. Many prefer the old Bianchi lightning grips, which cover the hammer. Wish they were still mfg.
