I don't understand this. The reason we renew in odd years is so we'll have an update on any changes in the law. This is also why all renewal classes began after the legislative session was over. Granted, I suspect all instructors here on TexasCHLforum will be up on the changes. :thumbs2:

Maybe this maybe just the beginning for us
DPS may want to us think it maybe too easy. ;-)
They didn't say anything on the shooting qualification as of yet.

You are right, Charles. Those here will know. But I talk to instructors all the time who don't know that their fingerprints won't be accepted by DPS after March 1. They don't know why they have not received the application packets they ordered months ago. They don't know that photos and fingerprints aren't required for renewals. I could go on and on...

I am concerned about the integrity of the CHL program. Many instructors don't know anything other than what they get from DPS every other year at their renewal class. (And we both know that not everything they hear at that renewal class is 100% correct!) But at least that is better than "just send in your money, take the online exam that is exactly the same as the student exam that you have the answer key for, and we will call it good"! You know they won't know what the changes are from this legislative session.

I am also concerned about students (and even instructors) who don't have internet access. And those who don't have nearby access to L-1 for fingerprints. In the entire DFW metroplex, there are only 7 L-1 ocations. Of those 7, only 1 is open on Saturday (Frisco), and none, not even ONE are open past 5:00 PM. Really? So, to get a CHL, you need to give up an entire Saturday for the class, and then you also have to take off work one day during the week to get fingerprints?

I firmly believe this will greatly cut the number of CHL applicants. Maybe that is the desired outcome.

no were in the material they sent me-the renewal notice or on the online application /payment page did they even mention the existence of a test. Twice, I have requested the courtesy of an e-mail clarification of just what they might want but this has not been answered. I reached the agency by telephone and had the existenct of a test confirmed to me.
Since I have not ordered certificates in some time, I do not have the password they are requesting for access to the test. Nor do I have any information about how to submit the test to them. I have requested these items via e-mail but am growing more and more convinced that I want nothing more to do with this agency.

The password was given out when you passed the instructor's course. The test is online, and there is nothing you need do to "submit" it, other than take it online. It will be scored after you take it (online) and you'll immediately be informed of the results. You can print out the notification if you want it for your records.

So, how are we supposed to know that we need to complete the written test when NOWHERE in the renewal documents is there any mention of the test?

Are you asking me? I knew the test was there, but didn't know that the instructor's password unlocked it. We were told last year (at instructor's school) that the renewal test was going to be online "soon". Certainly DPS has done a "lovely" job of getting that information out there, though there has been much discussion of it here on this forum. I'm not defending DPS, just answering some of mec's questions/complaints. I have a few complaints about DPS myself, but divorcing myself from DPS seems like "cutting off my nose despite my face".

SJF - YOU know the test is there. I know the test is there.

But, what about all the instructors who don't read the forum? Where in your renewal paperwork did you see anything about the test? Are you sure it is required? How do we know?

So many questions... so little info from DPS...

I agree. What should we do about it? :iagree:
