I know that was the reason given, but there's no doubt that eliminating them saved money for the auto makers.WildBill wrote:Pawpaw wrote:I still miss the old vent windows.I think this was due to looks over function.

Those vents were the cheapest "air conditioning" available. The ones in the Merc could be turned to catch air and shove it into the front seat. I'm really thankful that I was in PA, not Texas at the time.Pawpaw wrote: Most cars had that until they started cheaping out and made you push the vent window open by hand. My 53 Merc was black and was a sedan. If it had been a coupe I would of seriously tried to restore it. At least I think I would...that was a very long time ago.The Annoyed Man wrote:When I was a little boy, my dad drove a '53 Merc. Ours was a sedan, too. I would love to be able to tinker with that flat head engine again. It was a long time ago for me, too. I'm pretty sure that Dad sold it around 64. He ended up with a Triumph Spitfire and that was a long ways away from the Merc.Purplehood wrote:My 53 Merc was black and was a sedan. If it had been a coupe I would of seriously tried to restore it.
