Sorry but I believe every media type who covers her and allows her to get away with these kinds of statements unchallenged is a bigger dingbat. AOC is more than a few fries short of a happy meal. But she wields more power than she should have even been able to dream about because she is enabled by establishment media types. AOC would be nothing without them. Power in Germany, where they are struggling with the poor power factor of wind and solar to cope with heating demands, was $56/MWh yesterday. That is their norm, versus an average of $13-15 on ERCOT's grid. AOC is trying to cherry pick data so that she can get around the fact that her refusal to acknowledge thermodynamics or chemistry will hurt poor people while leaving rich folks like her unaffected. Never mind the fact that California's grid fails every summer where ERCOT does not.

ERCOT is currently running at $9,000.00 /MWh and has been since Sunday night. So ERCOT’s average rate doesn’t impress me that much at the moment.

The power losses are due to a variety of factors, not only wind/solar failures. Gas & coal plants also had problems.

By Wednesday, 46,000 megawatts of power were offline statewide — 28,000 from natural gas, coal and nuclear plants and 18,000 from wind and solar, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which operates the state’s power grid." AP

How about a few more NUCLEAR REACTORS! There are only 2 in Texas....WHY? Texas should be heated by Gas powered electric plants and Nuclear Power Station!

The simple answer is the price of natural gas kept falling and it was cheaper to supply energy using natural gas than nuclear. Both of the nuclear power plants in Texas had applied for permits to double the number of generators (each has 2). But when natural gas prices fell, those plans were put on hold.

Time to reup the request, sell the wind mills to help fund the start of some gas powered generators

Then why has Texas closed over 3,000MW in natural gas and clean coal if NG is so cheap?
The answer is that taxpayer subsidized windmills ($18 Billion in the last 9 years) are even cheaper than NG.
And what did we Texans get for our $18 Billion?
Power outages, frozen pipes, loss of income, probably some people died as a result also (I have no data on deaths).
Let's stop subsidizing failure. If wind and solar can compete on a level playing field, then great.
If not, give me coal and gas and nuclear.

ERCOT but more importantly the PUC didn't lean on power plants and natural gas lines to protect against an every decade event. They deserve plenty of blame. But the people like Ed Hirs who hate the open market for power that keeps out energy cheap will try to use this to end the marketplace and the result will be $0.17-0.20/kwh instead of $0.123. My point is that everyone will try to cast blame to advance their agenda, and most folks won't care much about the root cause beyond how it can make them look right. Some folks want to tear down the wind turbines that had nothing to do with this disaster and some folks want to end the open market. I think that the balanced approach is recognizing the benefits of wind power and feeding some of those subsidies into hardening the necessary and reliable infrastructure like natural gas, nuclear and coal; others will try to end the marketplace, which will cost Texans tens of millions over time.

My 2 cents, first those with the job to prepare/winterize the grid before hand should be given the oppertunity to seek employment else where and reliable people hired to replace them!
ERCOT should be run by Texans for Texans!
We Should be building Nuclear Power Plants!
Windmills are a good supplement to the grid but we need gas powered generators and Nuclear Plants

Prices are going to go up. How much is yet to be seen. Most people are on some form of a flat rate plan with their electric, but there are people who pay a market rate. There was one company who sold such plans that was telling their customers to change providers now, or they were going to see a HUGE electric bill.

PUC ordered the ERCOT to charge $9.00 a KWh to get people to conserve.

On Monday the ERCOT was at $1.20 so the PUC ordered the price higher.

I'm not sure which is more maddening: the people who will try to shift blame to make themselves look better, or the people (on both sides) who will try to use this to advance their own agenda.
