Thanks for the welcome over in the waiting room. This is a great resource and I am happy to have stumbled onto it. I have been putting off applying for the Texas CHL since it became available so I finally got off my duff and took the class last month. I was a California CCW permit holder for more than twenty years. CCW=Carry Concealed Weapon which was "pistol, revolver, or other firearm", so you could drive around with a loaded shotgun behind the seat of your pickup.

Have a small ranch up the Ozarks so the reciprocity with Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri is nice.

I thought ccw in california was almost impossible to get. I'm impressed.

Welcome RodL...wow you had a CCW in CA...did you live in a real remote county there?? a Rancher?

Have got a place in San Diego and wife and I would like to carry there as well...guess our ID required could be a CA ID card, b/c don't want my official residence (taxes, other) in CA. Our permanent residence is Dallas. But how to get a CCW in San Diego County?? Ideas??

Guys, I am an old timer. I got the California CCW in 1968 and was religious about the annual renewal. I lived in Kern County, as in Bakersfield (home of Buck Owens Crystal Palace, and Meryl Haggard). It is the only place where Govenor Terminator can visit without protestors. I suppose things have changed some since I left in 1992. My friends tell me that you actually have to go to a class to renew your CCW now. Something to do with the fact that reciprocity requires that folks packing guns need a little education on deathly force, mayhem and whatever. When I got the CCW it was a needs based thing and the local Sheriff or Police Chief made the decision based upon your requested need or if you happened to be a local good old boy, or a solid politcal supporter of the Sheriff. Yeah, out in farming and ranching country in California, the tree huggers and PITA folks don't carry much clout.

I am afraid I have no advise about CCW in San Diego, which is very close to the navel of the earth in terms of climate. Heck, in the middle of July here in Colleyville I wake up in the middle of night screaming Saaannn Dieeeeego, San Diego.........

Ha.....RodL...too much....love it. Well, I can bad-mouth CA a bit....I was born in Pasadena...til 5 then moved to AZ in the early 50's...spend summers n summer jobs in Sea World in CA , went to University there...i.e. spent alot of time there....

but jez...I hardly recognize everything anymore there in terms of attitude.

well....as they say on Nightline..."Just a sign of the times!"

Took my CHL class and tests today (so officially feel I can now post here; don't know why I waited so long)
Own a few handguns, but took the range test with a Kimber Custom Target

The instructor was Sam Pruett; recommended: a competitive shooter himself, and an excellent communicator born to teach. Plus we had the benefit of three LEOs from three different departments with about 90 years of law enforcement and military experience between them.

But I'm mixing topics.

Was introduced to firearms and hunting early. Killed and dressed my first deer, under supervision, at 11. Haven't hunted in many years, but I credit that childhood education with my basic firearm handling.

Trivia: I'm a 7th generation Texan. The ancestor who got here first, in 1829, was a McFarland.
