Two things noteworthy in this case: 1)a lady who is a kindergarten teacher in a blue state owns two semi-auto pistols and a .223 rifle. What are the odds of that? 2) That same lady, with a son who had asperger's syndrome, would allow him access to those guns.
Coming as this did on the heels of recent mass murders in other states, the first thing I thought of when I heard this yesterday was the opening scenes of Matt Bracken's original book. http://www.enemiesforeignanddomestic.com/excerpt1.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Some people may say I'm paranoid but it's not paranoia if they're really out to get you.

Sadly, my reasoning us not based on the strength of the Second Amendment or sanity amongst those who lead our government. This sad event will remain relevant through the weekend and then the next story will appear on our computers and televisions. Lindsay Lohan will have plastic surgery while serving 90 days for public stupidity and the press and the president will be crying for something to be done about the atrocity.

We live in a short news cycle culture which is, in many ways, the root cause of tragedies such as the Newtown killings. Passions rise over the truly horrific and the inane at the same rate. Sure the mayors, news analysts and politicians are getting their moments today. Tomorrow it will be something else. We take very little seriously as a society, with one exception, that being "what is in it for me". The president got his moment to be caring and emotional. The lib press got to show outrage. Various politicians got to feed their base. 27 families will bury their loved ones, and the rest of us will go on with life. Insane people will still walk the streets and evil will still work in the hearts of man.

The hard work will never be done. Honest "national conversation" about this event will never take place because no one individual, or interest group, will benefit from it. We are no longer a nation of great people. We are a conglomeration interest groups and the rest of the nation is only useful if they support our interest. Deep down all who are calling for gun control know that this is not about guns. It is insanity and evil manifest in a most dreadful manner. When these murdered children fail to support their interest they will move on.

That being said, I do hope that we will make serious efforts to make our schools a place where we can defend children from future attacks. We here know how that should happen, with less restrictions on 2A. Hopefully, by some truly remarkable act of grace, the lives of these children will stir the hearts of those involved to look beyond themselves.
This may be the most honest and eye opening post on this topic, not only on this forum but in all of the media pieces I have read over the past two days. Thanks for putting together these thoughts.

No 2 is not illegal. Eighteen to twenty year olds cannot buy a handgun from an FFL, but they can posses and own handguns.
It is legal in Texas, but that is completely dependent on state law.

You must be 21 or older to possess a handgun in CT and many other states.
I stand corrected. :tiphat:

No issue with Federal or TX law, but as you stated some states do have laws against it. I wonder, if they can restrict ownership/possession of handguns to those 21 yrs old and older, could they make a law restricting ownership/possession of handguns to people, say, 30 yrs old or older?

To be perfectly honest, I'm wondering how much media manipulation is going on with this one. Given that the rifle has gone from being found by leo in the back of the guy's car to being the primary weapon used in the shootings. It's just not adding up to me. (ok, to be really honest, none of it makes sense to me from start to finish, but the news coming out gives rise to more questions in the handling than answers)

He then drove to the school in her car with at least three guns, including a high-powered rifle that he apparently left in the back of the vehicle, and shot up two classrooms around 9:30 a.m., law enforcement officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The victims of the shooting were shot multiple times by a rifle, a medical examiner said Saturday, and Dr. H. Wayne Carver said the deaths are classified as homicides.
The vehicle the suspect drove to the school was registered to his mother. The rifle used was a Bushmaster .223-caliber, according to an official with knowledge of the investigation who was not authorized to speak about it and talked on condition of anonymity. The gun is commonly seen at competitions and was the type used in the 2002 sniper killings in the Washington, D.C., area. Also found in the school were two handguns, a Glock 10 mm and a Sig Sauer 9 mm.

DUI/DWI young kids deaths in 2009, 181.
In 2009, a total of 1,314 children age 14 and younger were killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes. Of those 1,314 fatalities, 181 (14%) occurred in alcohol-impaired driving crashes. Out of those 181 deaths, 92 (51%) were occupants of a vehicle with a driver who had a BAC level of .08 or higher, and another 27 children (15%) were pedestrians or pedalcyclists struck by drivers with a BAC of .08 or higher.
Do you see anyone of those victims having the same coverage as death by deranged man with a gun? :rules: :rules:

I just watched his address to the nation. It seems that he's going to do whatever he can to restrict our 2A freedoms. He has never shown much regard for our constitution, so who knows how far he'll go?

King Obama sees Congress as irrelevant and I will not be surprised to see him do an executive order to ban Assault Weapons that he will define... and without a grandfather clause. He will turn many law abiding citizens into criminals when they do not turn in their weapons.

"Is this the price of our freedom?" he asks. IOW, we need to remove our freedom in order to avenge 20 children. At the memorial yet, he couldn't resist declaring war on the people when he should have been sharing NOTHING but words of comfort and peace. I am so angry that the bile boils in my throat.
