Equality and choice. Why are they anathema to the left wing?
What do you not understand about the fact that a sales tax end up taxing a larger percent of lower income earners wages than it does the rich so you're ok with a tax increase on the poor but not the rich.
I think he understands perfectly when he said "every dollar someone
chooses to spend." So should a person who has more money, but chooses not to spend it, be penalized?
If the government attempts to help someone out just because they are poor, then equally, the government is penalizing someone else because they are rich. That is what happens if they aren't taxed equally. So people should not be treated equally just because they have more of something or less of something than someone else?
EDIT: removed personalization from reasoning.

So my "choice" to spend what little money I have on essentials should be punished at a higher overall rate than a rich person who has money to burn.

It taxes everyone for what they spend on NON-NECESSITIES...the lower income wage earners do not pay taxes on groceries, utilities, rent, insurance, medical, dental, and so on. Do you actually believe the wealthy and higher wage middle/upper middle class don't spend MUCH MORE money on taxable luxury and discretionary goods? With a flat sales tax, those who have more and spend more will pay more...luxury vehicles, expensive clothing, high end home furnishings, etc...all those things they don't HAVE to have, but choose to spend their money on. If I choose to go out and buy a new set of golf clubs, a new fly rod, or gun I will pay additional taxes for that choice...it up to the individual. Equality and choice.

I know math and English are hard for some people but 8% of $175 is the same no matter who pays it.
Math doesn't discriminate.
It's the same for Rich or Poor.
It's the same for Black or White.
It's the same for Male or Female.
It's the same for Young or Old.
It's the same for Christian or Muslim.
Why do the socialists hate equal treatment in the law for everyone?
If you were wondering, it's $14.

If you want to look at it that way. As long as you believe in "overall rates", you will always be correct. As long as I believe in treating everyone equally, I will always be correct. There's no sense in arguing numbers. For any real headway to be made, the discussion must boil down to the basics.

Once again...the money you choose to spend on "essentials" is not subject to sales tax...never has been. Basic grocery items ( milk, bread, vegetables, meat, etc...) are non taxable...discretionary items such as beer, wine, tobacco are taxed. The roof over your head is not taxed if you are renting...property OWNERS have to pay property taxes, which are used to provide municipal and county services, road maintenance, police and fire departments, and free public schools for EVERYONE...including those who pay NO taxes. If you CHOOSE to, you can buy clothing during an annual tax holiday prior to start of the school year, and avoid paying any tax on those items also.

I think there should be one sales tax rate for all sales. Carbonated water and Coke should be taxed the same. Newspapers and magazines should be taxed the same. Ice and liquid water should be taxed the same. Fresh sandwiches and frozen sandwiches should be taxed the same. Frozen pizzas and frozen pizza crusts should be taxed the same.
Equality. Choice. Freedom.

What I fail to understand is why the OWS bunch and most if not all liberals scream that the rich (1%) should pay their fair share when many of the 99% don't pay ANY share.

Unlike the mad moderates, the OWS herd are mostly Marxists and communists.

We have everything any other city has. What about electricity or water or Emergency services? This reminds me of an old joke.
Several scientists called to God and said they had figured out how He created life and they could do the same thing. They explained how He had taken the raw materials and mixed them together in just the right amounts and then applied an electrical charge to spark the organism to life. God thought for a second and decided this should be interesting, so He asked the scientists to demonstrate.
The scientists brought in some dirt and amino acids and started to mix it all together when God said, "Wait. Get your own dirt."
